[Northeast] Retaining copper wire

I'm having FIOS installed shortly. I'd like to ask them to leave the copper phone line in place.

Is this something they are required to do upon request, or is it installer discretion? In other words, what are my "rights" and how insistent can I be?

What phone service are you getting?

NM. Installer left the copper line in place, as well as the line for the old cable co.

You know you can't actually use the copper with VZ

If I were to cancel the FIOS service in the future I should be able to reconnect using copper for POTS, no?

Depending on the company, yes

Not with Verizon, once on FIOS, that premise will never have Verizon POTS again. You could in theory get another provider, if any are left

I think it comes down to install convenience.

At my old house the phone line was attached to the opposite side of the house vs. where the power, cable and ultimately FIOS, were attached. So the copper was left, but then again, I didn't have any services over the copper phone line there...

At my current house the installer removed the telephone copper, but I did have dry-loop DSL.

The only value I see in copper phone service over carrier provided VOIP is its ability to stay available during extended power outages... not sure why anyone would specifically want to leave it connected or not if the incumbent (Verizon) is not interested in supporting it? If they are interested, and you were actually able to order some service, would they not simply install new copper to your house?

Are you getting just FIOS data, or data + phone? It's my understanding if you get phone, the copper goes away. I don't think you have a "right" too keep it, because it's my understanding the phone company has the final word on how they deliver service. For example, if you're a customer with chronic (copper) line problems, VZ will eventually just switch you over to fiber if you're in a FIOS market to resolve the issue once and for all. You really don't have a say in it.

At my home I ordered data only, and they left my copper alone. (However, I did not have ANY service currently running on the copper so there was nothing to "switch over" to FIOS in that regard.) I've also had a bunch of data-only commercial installations done at client sites, and for one reason or another (CLEC providing dialtone, or T-1 present, or whatever) they had to leave the copper un-touched.

But to my knowledge, no, you cannot have FIOS data and still retain your VZ copper dialtone service.
