| What happens to ONT with cancelled service? I'm mulling over whether to switch to Comcast or not. I only have internet--no phone or TV.
At the moment I'm paying ~$80/mo for VZ's 25/25 plan. Comcast is offering a 20/5 plan for $30/mo for 6-mo, then $45/mo for 6-mo. VZ's cheapest plan, 15/5, is still more expensive at $55/mo, tho admittedly the difference could easily work out to be less than $200/yr and may end up being not worth it.
But this raised the question of what happens to the ONT if I cancel VZ service? I had it in my last apartment I actually cancelled service and re-started at the new location, in that case as far as I am aware the ONT was left in place.
I believe the ONT consumes ~20W of power. If they simply leave it in place, is it acceptable to them if I disconnect the battery and the unplug the ONT from the power outlet? It would still be in place, but I'm wondering if Verizon has some sort of a watchdog thing that would identify an ONT which is off-network and then trigger them to investigate whether it's been stolen or something similar. |

the ONT/BBU averages roughly $0.60 per month in electrical consumption.

| said by hubrisnxs:the ONT/BBU averages roughly $0.60 per month in electrical consumption. Thanks, that link you provided matches to what I measured with my kill-a-watt a couple of years ago, ~20W with the battery fully charged.
20W x 24hrs = 480W per day. Based on my last bill, I'm paying a bit under $0.20/kW for generation, transmission, distribution. So 9.6c/day, or $2.88/mo to run the ONT. Even if my rate were half that, $0.10/kW, the cost of the ONT per month is still $1.44.
Yeah, it's at the noise floor to some degree, then again at $30/mo for the Comcast service it represens nearly a 9-10% add-on for something that does nothing for me... I'm already switching over what would amount to ~$20/mo, so why not try for that extra 10%.
I'd prefer they leave the ONT in place, as I have no problem with it being mounted in my basement and it will make it easier for me (or someone else) to switch back to them in the future. The real question is whether the VZ police show up after some amount of time of your ONT being unpowered |

| reply to hubrisnxs said by hubrisnxs:http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r18599695- I think the math is wrong in this FAQ post???
He claims his router consumes 56.6W 24/7. He goes on to say his electric rate is $0.152/kWh. Then says that means his router is costing him $1.75/mo to run... that's too low?
Here's what I came up with--
56.6W x 24h/day = 1358Wh/day
1358Wh / 1000 = 1.358kWh/day
1.358kWh/day x $0.152/kWh = $0.2065/day
$0.2065/day x 30 days/month = $6.19/month
I must have being doing something wrong in my math, or forgetting something? |

 | reply to bemis Yes, the ONT stays in place.
Yes, you may unplug it and disconnect the battery.
If service is ever reordered it is as simple as plugging everything back in, which makes future installs painless.
It is very assinine to request that we remove the ONT. The only time we ask that you call us to remove the ONT is if renovating or demolishing the house. |

My numbers for the Actiontec Rev. A may be different than current models, but not too far off. |

| Yeah, I'd have to measure my own Actiontec before making a decision, but I have a feeling that a constant 60W is too much. That's quite a bit of power.
Though I would not be surprised if it could spike that high with all four ethernet ports filled, plus MoCA active, plus the wifi radios running, etc...
It's easy to take these little constant draws for granted.
If ONT + Actiontec are about 40W on average, that is about $5/mo for me. My total electric bill is $40-60/mo (most days my power usage is limited to just a few CFLs and my laptop for the ~4 hours I'm home and awake). So we're talking 10% of my household power consumption going towards running the equipment to provide internet.
I certainly intend to unplug the ONT if I do end up with Comcast, I'd rather have that $2-3 vs. waste it. I'll just have to see if the Verizon police come knocking... I guess I am wondering, if I cancel service today, and a year goes by and someone else lives at the house and the ONT is gone... who could they blame? |

Even powered off and unused, it still terminates the fiber. The laser signal may cause eye damage, although I'd have to qualify that statement since I don't know what class the laser is rated. |

| reply to vzfiosguy So if you leave the ONT in place, and a few yrs down the road reactivate FIOS, they simply turn on service thru a possibly obsolete ONT. If you remove it or have it removed, you're more likely to get a newer ONT.... The question is; If YOU remove it, but their DB shows it still in place, what happens? -- "My hat, my cane, Jeeves". |
