Wireless Router Antenna Mod

Okay I've got a couple of good devices to play with:
1. Netgear WNDR3700v2
2. Linksys E4200 (version 1).

I wanted to extend the range of these two routers. Stock range is good however, I'm sure it can be better.

Everywhere I've seen info on the netgear wndr3700 its for the v1 and not the v2 so I'm looking for info and guides and possible antenna recommendations to place on the device itself.
Currently, the wifi signal is acceptable, but i want it to be stellar.

I've made another post in which I've detailed some signal related info corresponding to the netgear wndr3700v2.

here it is: »Wifi Antenna Recommendations

Id prefer modding the netgear cuz it would mean that i can run all my openwrt customizations as well. i also want to mod the linksys as a pet project but i can only run tomato on it.

thanks,
c

The WNDR3700vx is a MIMO device so built into the DSP is a special code that is specifically optimized for the antennas that come with the unit .... Changing the antennas will not do anything to improve your signals due to this special MIMO code.

The only way you can improve the way the wireless signals propergate is via placement of the unit. The rule to follow for placement is

As high as possible
As central as possible
As much air as possible.

So for example in a 2 story house place the router on the 2nd floor 18 inches from the ceiling and as central as possible usually near the top of the staircase leading to the 2nd floor

Most people will not do this because it usually involves spending more money and effort.

Moz - have you ever dealt with any of the mimo amplifiers from various companies like this:

I don't have any experience with them, but am curious to get your opinion of them if you have. Thanks.

Get a hold of a Unifi AP-HP from Ubiquiti
Put this up stairs connect(wired) to LAN port on router
and magic WiFi covers the house.
We use these for Hotel/Motels work great
to extend and maximize coverage.
