2 edits | Menagerie of Netgear I had to replace my DSL modem last night.. it was a year old Motorola that seemed to come within a couple degrees of letting it's smoke out.
Anyhow.. this is the lineup of gear, originally set up by a friend-gone-away.

FVS318v3 router/firewall (sits next to the dsl modem, connects most of the wired devices in the house) »support.netgear.com/app/products···_id/2423

FS108 switch (up-linked to the 318 for a couple devices at the other end of the house. »support.netgear.com/app/products···_id/2374
Before replacing the modem, all the animals played nice together.
Now they don't. I tried factory reset on the devices which have it, and tried using the wizards. Nada.
The one thing I can get consistently is a single connection to the 'net via the modem. If I hook up any of the other devices, there starts to be some kind of DNS server error.
I just started my night shift, so i will be researching as I can.. but I wanted to get the question out there early.
I am not particular as to how they are laid out, and I don't need the VPN services to function.
Any ideas on how to best arrange things?

| I am not too familiar with this set up but you may have to set your modem to a bridge mode so that the logon to your dsl account is done with the fvs318 device. The modem will act as a conduit between the fvs318 and the dsl line, you do not want to have multiple devices trying to logon to your dsl account. You may have to search netgear modem bridge mode to get instructions. After you have successfully bridged the modem, attach the fvs318 device and use the setup wizard to walk you through the process.
I hope things didn't get too out of whack when you reset the devices.

I think that may be what was going on... the 318 was in a battle with the modem to authenticate. I set the modem to bridged, and let the 318 take over. Once that was up and happy, I added hooked up the switch with no problems.
Lastly, the wireless access point is up, but I've got to work out why devices connecting through it have internet access, but not access to the wired devices. I currently have it wired into the 318 via it's WAN port, so I think it is creating it's own little network. Maybe if I plug into one if it's LAN ports instead it will become part of the 318's delegation. Now that I think about it, the wireless router may also be attempting to provide DHCP services. If I understand things, the 318 should be the only one doing that.
All I know, is the wife and kids are no longer out for my head. =) | |
