 | Best ADSL Modem for PFSense? I am trying to setup PFSense with my current CenturyLink ADSL connection. I have a Netopia 2240N DSL Modem now, and I am not having much luck getting it to work either in Double NAT mode or in Ethernet Bridge mode.
This is not a supported modem from CenturyLink, so I was thinking of getting the PK5000z to see if this would work any better.
My problem is that I get no Internet access from the LAN to the WAN connection. All websites timeout. |

| Are you only using a single DSL line? This Zoom modem is a bridge only modem. »www.zoomtel.com/products/5715.html
Setup pfsense to use PPPoE, it straight forward for a single line.
I use the Zyxel PK5000Z in PPPoE bridge mode, using MLPPP. |

 | I was able to get my Netopia 2240 working with PFSense. Though I have thought about switching to the PK5000z.
Thanks for replying. |

 | reply to player I'm still rocking a ZyXel 660 DSL modem. Popped it into bridge mode and its worked great for near four years i think now. -- --bc |

Using an old Westell 6100 modem I had lying around (to replace the Westell Wi-Fi router they had), stuck it in bridge mode, works just fine. These 6100's were handed out a lot, and I'm sure it would be fairly easy to get an ex-CenturyTel customer to give you one on FreeCycle or something. |

| reply to player I'm not currently running a dedicated box, but my 2wire 2700HD-G works well in bridged mode.
Before this, I used a old trusty modem: the USR 9002. It works great in USB mode using the Eagle drivers. Not sure how that translates to BSD though, I always used a Linux box like IPcop or Smoothwall.
Used PPPoA on both and I got both of 'em for under $8 each years ago. --

 | reply to player Don't bother with the PK5000Z. They suck and have poor firmware in them. I've used them before and people reported not being able to VPN properly through them. Firmware upgrades fix that but who knows what else is not working right.
I find that the M1000 or the Q1000 are the best modems to go with. The M1000 can be found dirt-cheap on your local craigslist site. Also the Q1000 can be had for $50-70 easily on craigslist.
The Q1000 requires the version 34 firmware (I'm not sure what the exact version is) to make VPNs work properly. I have 4 in service and they never quit. (They run pretty warm though!) Make sure they are well ventillated.
Good luck!
