In market for new headphones

Last year, I purchased a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-A700. They're great headphones, but I am now in the mood for something with a little more bass. I seem to be turning into more of a basshead. There was a store in the area where I was able to demo headphones, but it looks like they couldn't compete with Amazon Any suggestions on what I might like compared to what I currently have?

By the way, I'm using these with a HiFiMan EF2A headphone amp.

Tried them out at the Dayton Hamvention.. spoke to Bob Heil himself about them.. fantastic..

might have to wait a while for them to be available..

I assuming you want accuracy, rather than just a bass boom box sound..

10 to 22khz..

Do you have a price range?

The ATH-M50 are widely recommended and should be bassier than the A700 without being "basshead" phones. A700 are bass-light, M50 are maybe a touch bassier than neutral (judging from frequency charts).

If you want real basshead phones you could look at something like the Sony XB500 or XB700. Those are too bassy for me but you can usually find them at a Best Buy or something if you want to listen to them.

I have the AKG K271 (and love them) but they are probably pretty similar to your A700.

I'm hoping to not spend more than 200, but willing to go 300 if it's worth it.

I will probably end up swapping the headphones depending on the music or if I'm watching a movie. It's probably not really worth the expense but sometimes I'll listen to an album and think there should be more bass to it.

All the ones I mentioned are below $150 so that should be fine for your price range. Another one a little more expensive (around $200) to look at is the Beyerdynamic DT770.

I have two pairs of full-size headphones and three IEMs so I have no quibble with the idea of owning different sets for different tasks

If this graph isn't too confusing-looking it is a frequency comparison of the ones I mentioned plus your A700:

The zero line is neutral; you can see the A700 has the least bass, the Beyerdynamic is still a bit shy in sub-bass but fairly good in mid-bass/lower mids, the M50 is close to neutral and the Sony is quite bass-heavy. Now, quality is not represented on this graph, but they all have good reputations.

Thanks for the suggestions and the graph. I think you've narrowed down my choices.

Was going to post a thread asking the same thing!....

My tastes range from loud rock (Black Sabbath) to R&B (Katy Perry, Whiz Khalifa)...

I prefer the old style of headphones, that actually cover your ears. I am currently using a set of the earbuds that came with my iPod, and they are okay, but there are times when they start to distort at high volume... (Sometimes, you just HAVE to listen to "War Pigs" loud enough to drown out your own thoughts...)

You can never go wrong with a set or 3 of these:
