| If you can tolerate it, the Mormons have got some kind of searchable database that may be at no cost for a certain amount of use. »familysearch.org/ They do not claim to have everything, but they have a large collection of data. |

CylonRedPremium,MVM join:2000-07-06 Bloom County | reply to Nazcar A large chunk of census data from teh 40's I believe was just opened up. If you know that family went thru Ellis Island I believe there is a db for that data as well. The Mormans have one of the best genealogy data out there for a lot of people.
Our local library (well - next town over) has a large genealogy room for our county and nearby counties. My aunt used it extensively for research to get her kids in the Daughter's of the American Revolution. -- Brian

| reply to Nazcar Ancestry.com is awesome even though you have to pay but here are some free ones
»www.genealogysearch.org/free/freeware.html
»www.genealogy.com/index_a.html -- Today I saw something that reminded me of you. But dont worry, I flushed and everything went back to normal. |

For the software, I use a open source program called gramps for my local and use a free ancestry.com account. While you can't use any of ancestry's data, you can get hints. Another resource is find-a-grave, and of course Google.
edit - apparently my fingers like too many 'e's |

You NEED this:
Believe me...pay the $31. You won't regret it. This is an astounding piece of software that will help you tremendously. You ARE going to end up with hundreds of people in your family tree...this is the only way to keep track of all of that.
This is the the site I use the most:
You'll get a lot of mileage out of this site before you need to pay for anything.

Well OK then...!
Looks good!
Actually, "whatever works"...because doing it 'by hand' is just simply impractical.
One of the things that I noticed what something curious that really doesn't manifest itself in our 'modern' society. In my Oregon Trail genealogies, the software picked up widows that married brothers of the deceased...sometimes within a month of the death of their husbands.
While 'we' marry for love (typically), a widow in those days out West was in -very- serious straits (especially if there were young children involved) if her husband died. Marriage was for survival...if nothing else.
I also do photo restorations...which I enjoy. The advent and availability of modern scanners allows recovery of photos that are almost entirely gone due to poor "fixing" of the photographic print.
Some of them are very old. The oldest one that I did was taken in 1834. It was nearly white when I got it, but it recovered nicely after processing (shown above). -- »www.archive.org/details/Meatpies_1984

| reply to Nazcar I downloaded myheritage. It's excellent. And even better I could import my .ged file from Ancestry.com. The one drawback is some features are only available on the pay version which is a bit expensive at $75.00 -- Today I saw something that reminded me of you. But dont worry, I flushed and everything went back to normal. |
