Re: I'm an over-zealous lawn idiot Thanks for the info everyone. I'm going to skip all fertilizers until the fall when I do a heavy re-seed. I've already moved the mower to mow one-notch higher. Going to watch the brown patches to see if they expand, or if they just stay the same. Next stop is to a local place to see some gardening tips.
I didn't know that grass-clippings alone do not cause thatch. I thought thatch was the eventual outcome of mowing and leaving the grass clippings. (The lawn is never high enough where there are huge goblets of clippings on the ground.)
I'll post some pics after I take them today hopefully! -- He used to say that soul shine, is better than sunshine, better than moonshine, damn sure better than rain.

Ok here we go. The lawn looks OK, just not great. Pics attached, and close-ups of the problem I'm talking about. |

They'll tell you to get a soil test, and can then guide you on exactly what nutrients you need to supply, and which to avoid.

We used to get red thread out on the ballfield, to some extent, about every year. High heat, high humidity... a multitude of fungal problems. We uded to just ferilize reularly and it always came back. it just looked a little unsightly for a few days/weeks. If it's fairly limited, you might try just using a stiff metal leaf rake and removing/discarding the dead plants. -- Keep your eye on the ball, your shoulder to the wheel, your nose to the grindstone, and your ear to the ground. I begrudgingly mow my lawn every 1-2 weeks unless I can talk my wife into doing it (we have a rider, WTF?). The weeds are always green, and very tolerant of my neglect. The moles kill anything that resembles grass, so I don't have to worry about it creeping in and choking out my dandelions and clover. +1 to this.
your lawn is basically a highly manicured weed field. don't overthink it. -- Everyone should own a Mac! Go Bucks! |

Also....it appears your neighbors are doing a good job with their lawns. If they are neighborily, maybe they have tips that might be unique to your area.
We are slowly covering our new homes yard(1/2 acre) in zoysia a pallet at a time. Just put down 4 pallets(~500 sqft a pallet) this past weekend. Previous home owners let the whole yard pretty much go to dirt. Will keep checking back for tips. Never had a manicured lawn, only wild srawberries, clover, nut grass....etc |

I would, but all of the neighbors either pay a landscaping company the $250/month to handle the lawn and its issues weekly by choice, or they are retired and have to do it out of need. I'm the only one on my block who does anything himself. Mostly because I like to learn, but I also have better ways to spend $200/month x 9 or 10 months a year. -- He used to say that soul shine, is better than sunshine, better than moonshine, damn sure better than rain.
