Years ago, "lumber yards" (a lot of people don't know what those are) had scrap bins and you could take what you needed (within reason, I presume).
I was at Lowes one time and needed some "scrap" pieces and they pointed me to their bin. The pieces were color-coded and there was a sign with the prices based on the color  |
