| How to fix broken edge on sliding glass door? It seems that my little ones might have "accidentally" thrown something and took a chip out of the edge of our sliding glass door.
Any ideas:
1. What this part that is chipped is called 2. The best way to fix it? Can I get a replacement edge strip and replace the entire part that is broken?

Just show them the picture.
The glass companies will buy it in bulk and just trim to fit.
Being that it's white it may have yellowed a bit because of the sun. |

jester121Premium join:2003-08-09 Lake Zurich, IL | reply to clevere1 The piece in question is an inside stop, basically a vinyl profile that does the same thing as a wood quarter round. Of course rather than nails, there will be a section of the stop running parallel to the glass which is locked into a channel in the main door panel frame along the length of the glass.
Assuming you can get a length of material from the manufacturer, a pair of pliers should allow you to easily pull the stop out of the frame, apply tension straight up along the surface of the glass (not out away from the glass). Cut the replacement to precisely the same length with miters, lay it across the channel, and use a rubber mallet to beat it into place (once again, swinging the mallet parallel to the surface of the glass, never at an angle where the force will be impacting the glass.
Getting everything warmed up a bit with sunlight or a hairdryer may help prevent cracking from brittle material, don't use a heat gun. |

If it were mine I would use some good caulk or white silicone to repair the damaged area. Then if it gets worse later attempt the replacement. |

| reply to clevere1 Thanks All. I went down to my local window place and purchased a 5 foot piece for $3.00. Installed it in about 10 seconds
The only issue is that the piece is got isn't flat and doesn't sit well in the channel. I will be going back to the window place and getting a better replacement. -- Where's th' DAFFY DUCK EXHIBIT?? |

I was was a perfect child too.
This is where I learned about glass companies.
You might think about changing out all 4 pieces because they get yellow and brittle with age. When you start touching the glazing pieces they will break. |

My dad made me (us) change out the window(s) after the third time. I know we were abused. This was in the 60's.
We learned after throwing a football through 9 stacked up storm windows for cleaning. We didn't have to pay for the glass. Just do it!
We constantly broke basement casement single pane windows that had to be puttied in. Sports in the back yard mostly. |

When you start touching the glassing pieces they will break. I don't mind if they yellow What do you mean by "glassing" I think I meant glazing. I haven't messed with glass myself for quite a few years: Glazing, which derives from the Middle English for 'glass', is a part of a wall or window, made of glass.[1][2] Glazing also describes the work done by a professional "glazier". Glazing is also (less commonly) used to describe the insertion of ophthalmic lenses into an eyeglass frame.
Common types of glazing that are used in architectural applications include clear and tinted float glass, tempered glass, and laminated glass as well as a variety of coated glasses, all of which can be glazed singly or as double, or even triple, glazing units. Ordinary clear glass has a slight green tinge but special clear glasses are offered by several manufacturers.
Glazing can be mounted into a window sash or door stile, usually made of wood, aluminium or PVC. The glass is fixed into a rabbet (rebate) in the frame in a number of ways including triangular glazing points, putty, etc.. Toughened and laminated glass can be glazed by bolting panes directly to a metal framework by bolts passing through drilled holes.
Glazing is commonly used in low temperature solar thermal collectors because it helps retain the collected heat.
New vinyl is easy to work with. This won't be hard. |
