I don't know how much grass you took care of in GA, but I am sure it is like here: do absolutely nothing, and it looks OK. Kill yourself, and it looks the same. I guess the lazy luck out, but you will never have that dark green carpet like grass. |

~Kill the weeds so they don't compete with the grass for water and nutrients. After you get the weeds under control, it only requires spot weeding now and then, for the ones that pop up here and there. ~Mow at the correct height for your grass type. For northern grasses, that usually means 2.5" to 3.5". I cut to 2.75". The most common abuse is that people cut it far too short. Taller grass leaves more of the grass blade, and it blocks sun from allowing weed seeds to germinate, meaning less weeds to spot treat later. ~Fertilize with the proper amount and type of fertilizer, and at the proper times of the year.

I guess the lazy luck out, but you will never have that dark green carpet like grass. The concrete is almost a year old now. It has a sealer on it, I assume that is why it has stayed nice looking. There is one nasty spot where my work van decided to dump half it's steering fluid on it.
In GA, we had a little less grass than this. But you're right, it was hard to keep it looking nice. Anywhere the sun shined, it would fry it all summer. The only place it looked nice was over our septic leach field. |

Lurch77Premium join:2001-11-22 Oconto, WI kudos:4 | I've needed no water so far this year, we've had enough rain. I don't have a sprinkler system, so the grass generally tones down during the summer peak. And I have always wanted to learn 'Shop, but not enough patience with it. |

TheMGPremium join:2007-09-04 Canada kudos:1 | reply to Lurch77 Over here to get grass looking this good you have to water so much you end up with a $300 water utility bill (our water is metered), and that's for a fairly small amount of lawn.
This year is particularly difficult. Lots of very strong winds, no rain at all in the last 2 weeks, very little snow during the winter. Add to that the fact that we still have the occasional frost at night.
Most lawns around town still look like complete trash.
If we're lucky, we *might* have a lawn that looks something like your neighbor on the left, but I'm not holding my breath. |

It was just a good opportunity to show the difference. Though my neighbors do have the time. I am very good friends with them. He just doesn't care about it as much as I do. No big deal to me. On the other hand, their flower gardens are far better than mine. Difference in priorities. |

Annapolis Maryland to ban use of fertilizer with phosphorus in most cases
quote: Such bans are not unique. A number of local governments across the nation have enacted similar bans, including Dane County, Wisconsin, and several counties in Michigan. Others are considering similar action.
Minnesota enacted a statewide ban in 2005, a year after Minneapolis and St. Paul took action. As with the Annapolis ordinance, the Minnesota law prohibited the use of phosphorus fertilizer unless a new lawn is being established, or a soil test indicates the need for phosphorus.
I used to be a fanatic but as I got older the desire to impress the neighbors waned. Most of my neighbors now are doing the same given the effort to clean up the Chesapeake Bay. We are finally getting the message that every chemical or pollutant that is used in the bay watershed eventually gets washed into the bay.
Now I just let whatever will grow alone. As long as it's green it's good. |

Re: The Grass is Always Greener..... I'm just wondering why that boulder is in the middle of the lawns. It doesn't seem to fit in or serve a purpose unless it's on of those fake ones with something under it hidden. |

The previous owners of my house were retired and spent a LOT of time on their flower beds, all separated by rock/brick structures so I can't just remove them and lay grass over it.
Not only that those are a lot of work, but I'm neighbors to people who are like the previous owners of my house. They are retired and spend a lot of time in their garden. Their grass is greener too
And I have my basement renovations underway, which need to be finished by August.
Even if my wife wasn't pregnant, she'd be useless
