[BC] New Telus Installation

Would love some advice on the best equipment for my setup from Telus. I ordered Optik TV, Optik Internet (15mbit), and Phone. Right now my network is:

Asus RT-N16 (Tomato RAF Firmware)
- PC
- MacBook Pro
- PS3
- Secondary Laptop

When the Tech comes today, should I ask for a certain modem for example. What are you're thoughts guys? Thanks in advanced.

You can't ask for a certain modem. All DSL users minus the Lite users are getting the Actiontec gateways. Lite users are getting the SpeedTouch (at least to my knowledge).

Lite users get the Speedtouch, yup.
High Speed and Turbo (1.5 - 15) get new Zyxel gateways (as of this week).
Turbo 25 and Optik gets Actiontec.
However, field techs (at least in-house techs) have access to the ALU modem still. There's a 25/5 business package now where the tech is instructed to bring the always there but always rare ALU if static IP is requested. It is not available to be mailed out, but a knowledgeable tech should have access to one should it be requested.

lol yeah I'll need the ALU modem. The firmware on this Actiontec is horrid. Thanks for the replies.

Interesting. The VSG1432 should be a fairly decent modem provided Telus doesn't lock down the firmware too much. I wonder why the Turbo 25 don't get the Zyxel as it would work just as well for that as well. Only the Optik bundles require the Actiontec for the HPNA functions.

Here's Telus's manual on the Zyxel to see some screenshots:

Is it possible to get a business internet connection at a house? I know you used to be able to (as I've had it in the past) but I remember talking to someone that tried to do that but Telus said it wasn't possible.

So, what ended up happening? Did you get a bridgeable modem?

What ended up happening was me getting Optik TV/15Mb Optik Internet/Phone. I wanted 25Mb internet but the only way for me to get it with Optik TV was to do a separate order of a fax line, transfer over the internet connection to that line then cancel the fax line. Since 25mb Optik Internet isn't available to me I had to go with that option.

Okay. So which modem did you end up getting? (I know the 15 can use different modems, but I'm trying to see what my options are.)

Thanks.

I got the Actiontec V1000H. Apparently that is the only one available now when you get Optik TV/Internet together. If you try to bridge the V1000H, you degrade the signal for the Optik TV. So far the Actiontec V1000H has been stable, no connection issues. Like I said I will get the second line installed and have the connection transferred to it so I can have the extra speed and stand alone modem. I'll have Tomato firmware on my Asus RT-N16 back in action with a whole lot more networking options than the stand alone firmware on the V1000H.

@telus.net

All that said the Actiontec V1000H does not support IPv6. Other than that it seems to be a good modem.

I just got the new ZyXEL today. Nice upgrade from the flakey SE567 for me (which was ~broken in my case, wouldn't do the things I set it to like keep static DHCP properly) I do find it is a little slow on the web interface but they often are.

I notice in the log (under maintenence) it notes the creation of the admin user and the creation of a user called "tech". I assume the tech user has a default password which I would like to change (security paranoia). Also if the tech user interface is not locked down as much it would be nice to mess with the more 'advanced' settings.

Does anyone know the default tech password? so far my Googling hasn't turned up anything useful. Perhaps this is so new that no one has posted it yet? I did try some obvious ones like tech, 1234, 0000, admin to no avail.

The box I got from telus only had a quick install guide which was pretty useless (tells you how to setup telus webmail) . But if you google vsg1432 the first hit is the PDF on the company website. »us.zyxel.com/upload/download_lib···_ed1.pdf It is better at least than the quick guide. And the Telus version has only 56 pages whereas this has 408. I notice the screenshots of the interface are different than mine which I suppose Telus customised/restricted. So not all the features in the manual seem possible from the regular admin login. The PDF lists the default password as 1234 for admin whereas my unit was 'telus' so it may be the tech login password is also custom to telus. I suppose we could just ask them.

I haven't tried the USB connector yet. Seems like a cool idea, I've had such a router in the past. Less power than having to leave a whole computer on as a server which is nice but I don't know the limitations. Anyone tried it yet?

Cheers,
rusl

I just got an attempted install from a Ledcor employee/contractor. They only have the Actiontec modems and have no access to anything else.

So, not sure what to do now if I want 2 dynamic IPs and a modem in bridge mode.

Does it look like the ZyXEL will run in bridge mode? Also, so far Telus is telling me it won't work on the Turbo 25 package. Which speed are you on?

Thanks.

According to the datasheets, the ZyXEL doesn't support the VDSL2 8b profile used for Optik 25 and Turbo 25 customers. That's why the Turbo HS 1.5-15 customers are receiving it, as it supports ADSL2+ fallback. Rusl was using the SE567 prior, which is an ADSL2+ gateway.

Where do you get that the zyxel modems don't support 8b? For the 1432 and 1435 it says "up to 17a" and for the 870 it specifically lists 8b.

I was specifically looking for 8b within the gateways' documentation. If it did support 8b, TELUS wouldn't be saying that it's not offered with the 25 Mbit plans.

I feel your pain.

I work for Ledcor, as a Telus contractor. I still cannot find any ALU modems.

I think it's ridiculous that Telus cannot provide a 'modem' to customers that have a network setup that's too advanced for the actiontec to handle.

For example in my case, I have dd-wrt on an linksys e4200 doing the following things the actiontec doesn't support:

- ipv6 tunnel through sixxs.
- highly customizable qos, right down to modifying things via the commandline.
- bandwidth tracking by day / month. Used for informational purposes currently.
- Multiple Virtual Access Points (VAP's). Some of my wifi devices don't support wpa2. Only wpa. So instead of having to set my entire wifi network to wpa, I created a VAP that's set to wpa, and left the main wifi as wpa2.
- VLAN support (802.1q). I run multiple vlans via a switch that supports 'dot1q'. Being that dd-wrt supports vlan tagging, I can do routing, etc, on the 'router' where it belongs.
- Combining the last two, a VAP bridged to a specific VLAN to create a 'guest' network accessible via wifi, and wired (tagged or untagged via the switch). This guest network, by definition, has no access to my main network, regardless of tcp/ip settings.
- Advanced 'static dhcp' leases. I think the actiontec did support limited mac to ip dhcp leases, but dd-wrt is more customizable in that regard.
- Multiple subnet dhcp service. (related to the guest network above. dd-wrt has different settings for the different vlans).
- Non restricted shell access. Very useful for lots of things. Monitoring, setup, troubleshooting, backup, etc. I cannot remember the amount of times I've needed to run tcpdump on the router to figure out what's happening on the 'wire'.
- multiple IPs. Not currently using more than one ip, but I could, simply by creating an aliased interface. Telus still provides 2 ips. How does one use this feature with Telus provided hardware?

There's probably a bunch that I missed, but that's right off the top of my head.

Not everybody fits a "one-size-fits-all router". Some people actually have a network that doesn't fit Telus's 'cookie cutter'. I was lucky enough to be able to get the actiontec into bridging mode when I first switched from adsl2+ (15mbit) to vdsl (25mbit no tv).

If I wasn't able to bridge the actiontec, I think I would have been forced to switch to Shaw. From what I understand, they actually officially support a bridging 'modem'.

I hope the upcoming v2000 actiontec required for dsl bonding supports bridging. What's the point of having 50mbit + if you're stuck using a sub-par router?

titan_rw, how do you order your supplies? Our catalogue has ALU's in it, you should see if you can get them added to yours. Send me a PM if you want more info.
