 | Apartment hunting sucks in this city I am looking for an apartment in Brooklyn or Queens and it's horrible.
Yes I know partially my fault because I lost my job and had to decide between paying AMEX and Rent. But I paid amex off months ago so credit report is better but still not great. Oh and I got a new job paying better money yay me!!!
Anyway what's up with all the scammers?
I have been told to meet people at 1 location, and it's beautiful. But then they take you a block away to some dump.
I have been taken to apartments with the toilet in the kitchen next to the fridge (you could eat while you crap).
I have been taken to places where the entrance to the apartment is via the fire escape. You had to enter another apartment exit their window and crawl in through another.
I have met with Real Estate agents who were up front and told me I didn't qualify for an apartment because the landlord wanted whites only, and this was in Bed Stuy. Oh wait they call it Stuyvasent heights now.
I have been priced out of apartments when they landlord demanded 6 ways. 4 months rent 1 security and 1 broker fee.
I really am thinking of moving to NJ, it really wasn't this hard what changed?

 | Dayum. Sorry to hear you're going through this. Hopefully you find something beautiful that fits your needs soon.
My father is a Real Estate Broker. PM me and I can give you his info. He won't show you places like those. -- "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use." - Galileo |

I had no idea how easy city living could be. Good apartments at good prices, Im making decent money at my job, and it rains 80% less here than New York. Oh, and you get to look at this:

As far as the housing situation goes, coming back up to Boston was a huge relief. The rental situation up here is tight, but not crazy difficult like New York. Meanwhile, the hubs and I are homeowners now - and for what we paid for our house in Cambridge, in Brooklyn we might be able to get a condo a third the size, and it would be like apartment living except with a mortgage payment instead of rent, with condo fees on top of it.
Those wide open spaces out west are incredibly beautiful, and I can imagine how much lower the stress levels can be out there. OTOH, I think a lot of us city mice would have a hard time dealing with having to drive everywhere. Walkable neighborhoods and public transit give one a feeling of connectedness to the community that's hard to get if you're getting from point A to point B in your car all the time. -- "Strive to change the world in such a way that there's no further need to be a dissident." My neighborhood is the very definition of "walkable neighborhood". I also live literally next door to the light rail station and a major transit hub. The University of Denver is across the street from me. I have friends who get by around here with no car. They even have bike rentals right on the street--pop in a credit card, unlock the bike, and you're good to go. -- You're so vain... I bet you think this post is about you. |

You probably still won't get the apartment, but at least you'll work off some of your frustration. |

 | reply to HardwareGeek Craigslist is pretty helpful, just don't go threw anyone that charges. I never pay someone. Get yourself a copy of your recent credit report yourself and print copies. I moved here a year ago and have had two residences and both have been pretty sweet. Unless you have money to spend I suggest just using craigslist.
Try Astoria, or Brooklyn |

The city will go after the agency and set them up with undercovers. |

 | reply to HardwareGeek Was out of town for the past few days, going to give Pheonix pops a call on Monday.
I had an apt viewing before I left and it was a decent place but then the guy wanted to show it to other people before he took my deposit so got the feeling they didn't want to rent to me. -- Email/MSN: Michael at hardwaregeeks.comAIM: MikeR35292 |

 | reply to Alpha Phoenix it's on Autumn between Edan and Jamaica. nice area a mixture of all races, white, blacks, purples and yellows. Seems quite. Half block to the train and 2 buses.
I will post pics soon it's still being painted, and floor put down.
It's an old building built in 1910, brick with hardwood floors. 2nd floor apartment 3 total apartments in building. Landlady says if I ever get hungry she will always have an extra plate of food ready for me. lol
