Wall Safe Behind a Picture

I'm trying to figure out a way to mount a picture over a wall safe so that it's hinged. A piano hinge will open less than 90 degrees before the frame hits the wall. I'm sure there are some type of special hinges that will work, just not sure what they are called or where to get them.

Maybe look at Zero Clearance Hinges like they use for cabinets?

European Cabinet/Furniture Hinges may work for you. They allow for opening of cabinet or furniture doors for more then 90 degrees (many up to 180 degrees some even up to 270 degrees).

Unlike piano hinges (which you would mount flat in between wall and picture frame), cabinet/furniture hinges take up some space. You might be able to put the hinge in a wide and thick picture frame but more likely you will need to hide the hinge mechanism in the wall.

Re: Wall Safe Behind a Picture

If your picture frame is thick enough you can use one of these. I've seen these in action before and they are nice! You'd install one side in the wall and the side in the picture frame. Most likely one on the top and one on the bottom or 1-2 on the top depending on if you want it to open left/right or up.

I'm sure there is some other options as well. I'll ask my master woodworker friend who showed me this hinge before.

Forget the hinge...hang it on a nail over the safe.

Large picture frame is difficult for a small wife to handle.....hinges are more desirable.

How about using slides instead of hinges?

Why bother hiding it?
All (good) thieves check behind pictures frames for money or drugs, so they will see the safe anyway!
Bad thieves won't be able to open the safe so no need to hide it from them either!

If not cabinet hinges, maybe some offset hinges would work. Perhaps something like shutter hinges (but not so massive).

If you haven't already gone to the expense of installing a wall safe already (which is so mystery movie circa 1964), check out the above. Install it in the laundry room or other area that looks like an electrical breaker box belongs. You can make easily make this yourself or buy one pre made.

Works for me.

That kind of defeats the purpose of the thread. The OP asked how to HINGE mount a picture over a safe.

That's actually a great idea. Get an old breaker box and modify it to make it into a safe, but in such a way that it still looks like a genuine breaker panel.

Only problem is... if a lot of people start using this idea, thieves will eventually catch on and start checking breaker boxes.

If that break box said something that made sense or looked real it might work. The biggest thing is installation of the safe. You need to have it hooked to studs on the sides with braces between the studs on the top and bottom. Personally I prefer a floor safe. You can attach it much better to the floor and way way easier to hide. Thieves aren't about to move every piece of furniture, rug, etc. in your place just to see if there's a floor safe.

since i started doing pre purchase inspections you would be surprised how many people store the valuables in the breaker box and in the fan area of the furnace!

I once heard about someone that when they went on long trips they put expensive jewlery in two ziploc bags and then put it into the toilet's water tank. Basically because they figured if there was a break in nobody really would think to check the toilet water tank.

And what does all this extraneous conversation have to do with

I still think that using drawer slides may be a better option than hinges for the OP if they have the wall space.
