Never been serviced. Grew a family. Outlasted a wife. Still works!
I'm still using the same mower too. |

| reply to mityfowl I have the A107, and an LDG212 gas dryer that were left in the house by the previous owners. These things are so easy to work on that as long as parts are available at a reasonable cost, it's hard to justify upgrading. Anybody with internet access and an ohmmeter can get them back in service.
I chuckle every time I see the Consumer Reports figures on when to replace or repair. I like the idea of moisture sensors and more cycles, but I know when the newer machines need fixing, it's going to be harder and more expensive than working on these.
I think I've spent less than $50 fixing these over the past 14 years. A belt on the washer and a switch and both gas valves on the dryer.
Now watch, the motors will die during the laundry today. -- USNG: 16TDN2870 Find your USNG coordinates: USNGWeb |

 | reply to mityfowl I have one of those older maytags too. I believe its a 107, it was left here when I bought the place, even with the instruction/manual book. The girlfriend wanted to get rid of it. I said no effing way! |

| reply to mityfowl I had one of those! And a DE606 electric dryer. Both made in 1968 according to the serial number, making them older than me. My mother gave me her old Maytag which was 25 years newer. It died a couple years later, don't know what happened to the '68 model as I sold it for $20.. The dryer quit a couple years back but I could have fixed it for less than $50, but the wife wanted one with a larger capacity. |

| reply to mityfowl For me it's not an appliance but a lawn mower... I have an old 2 stroke Lawnboy push mower with a steel deck. Not only is it bulletproof, but it is so strong you can mow full walking speed through waist high grass without even bogging down.
I even ran over a basketball one time when mowing a ditch line. It chopped it up and spit it out the back without slowing down. Makes for a good wood chipper too when it comes to small trees. -- "The penalty good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men." - Plato - |

| reply to mityfowl How about a Kenmore fridge that was made in 1992? I think that's the oldest appliance we have. A next door neighbor asked me around 1995 how to get rid of an old fridge. I asked "What's wrong with it"? He said "Nothing. My wife wanted a new one". I said "You can get rid of it by setting it in front of my garage door". We use it as a 2nd fridge and we've had it in 3 houses now. I keep thinking about replacing it with a newer model to save some electricity, but the new stuff just doesn't seem to hold up nearly as well. |

| reply to mityfowl My house was built in 1991 and came with built-in Whirlpool dish washer, oven/microwave, and electric cook top. All of them are still in operation and have never required service or new parts.
I also have an old (about 1965) RCA 21" color TV that still works good. It's small by today's standards, but has a very clear picture and has never given a minutes trouble.
I have a Craftsman jig saw and 3/8" corded drill that I bought in 1962. I still use both and the only thing Ive had to do is replace the brushes once or twice. |

I wanted to go gas for a long time. Bought the last of the Maytag made gas dryers with the moisture sensors. It's solid and I have no complaints but its only 10 years old. |

Unfortunately, it looks like they don't necessarily make replacement parts like they used to, either. For example, replacement Maytag dryer roller drum wheels that last only a few years at most, where the originals lasted maybe 15 or 20 years. (Sigh.) |

 | reply to mityfowl We have a Maytag washer and dryer that are over 20 years old, I think the washer needed a new belt and the dryer needed a new igniter this year. We also have a 1979 lawnboy that still works great. |

Maybe, but more likely it's an intended consequence of engineering and manufacturing based on the concept of planned obsolescence, which is an indisputably "Western" idea. |

| reply to mityfowl I have a Maytag portable dishwasher from 1999 and it has never broken down (knock wood). Unfortunately Maytag got bought by Whirlpool and closed their Newton, IA plant so their quality has diminished. I usually buy Kenmore appliances but Best Buy had a better price on the Maytag so we went with that. |
