| [iO] cableCARD-m with HD Homerun [and Ceton?] First I would like to say, as a leading edger, that the below is not meant to be a negative on CV as I have had extremely good reception service for many years and very responsive techincal support of every kind. It is meant to be a [cautious] guide for others without criticism as of this day as they are responding.
cableCARD-m setup for HDHR3 and Ceton
This is my experience setting up a cableCARD-m for an HDHomerun3 Prime with Cablevision for those on the leading edge. Out of four CV Advanced CableCARD-m tech support people, only one knew more than enough to be of real help and the others had not heard of HD or Ceton, only Tivo and TVs and though making great attempt, were far from an answer or in the immediate case, a suggestion because there is an unknown problem [either hardware, card or area].
1. Go to the store and get a cableCARD AND a Adapter box. [Why you may ask do you need a Adapter box. Well, Cablevision and other cable companies use SDV or Switched Digital Video for more efficient use of the fiber bandwidth. For more information see below #7 for basics or try Wiki for more.]
2. Return and set up your Adapter box and your device that has the CableCaRD-m slot. Cablevision at this writing knows only that you may have a Tivo or a TV. As Ceton and HDHomerun3 & 6 become better known, they will have experience they do not have now.
3. So for a Quick installation review a. connect your cable coax in to the Input of the Adapter box. b. Connect the supplied coax from the Adapter Output to the TV, Tivo, HDHomerun3/6 or Ceton cable In. c. Also, and this is important, connect the Adapter box supplied USB A-B cable between the Adapter and the cableCARD-m capable device. d. Make sure all your coax connections are tight for good signal and low leakage.
4. Power the Adapter, then power the device. Turn on Adapter, front light will flash twice ever five seconds. Read Adapter manual and Performance[?] Tips will tell you to call your provider. Gotta love Cisco obscurity.
5. Now call Cablevision at 866-483-4448. [Unfortunately this will just put you into a standard CV phone cue with all the prompts. You cannot jump the prompts. a. Press 1 for English. b. Wait to have your whole account phone number and press 1 to affirm. c. Wait and respond 2 for Service. d. Again press 2 for Service and ask to talk to Advanced Tech for cableCARD installation. [No there is no direct number.] And you may have to again go from advanced to ADVANCED.
6. So you know all of what has to happen to make this work: a. One thing CV needs to do is pair your cableCARD-m with the Host. For this you will need a Host ID number. With HDHomerun3 this will be found by going into HDConfig/Device and doubleclicking on the Web address of your HD. The Main or Status window will reveal the Host ID. A must piece of information. b. You can get pairing of the HDHR3 [host] with the card without Adapter but you may only get the non Switched Digital channels [in otherwords basic] and will have to go back and scan again. c. CV will tell you not to connect the USB cable until after pairing, Adapter instructions say right after coax connection so it probably makes no difference. d. You can leave the Adapter in line or not while you sort out the pairing of the cableCARD-m as it may not go completely smoothly as experienced today. [Apparently both HDHR and Ceton card pairing are having issues on CV (in this area?) as yet unresolved. May be card itself.] e. Once your Adapter is connected to your cable and your device is connected properly to the Adapter with coax and USB and the card is properly paired between itself and the host, you should have almost full cable box access [some exceptions may apply].
7. A quick explanation of Switched Digital Video. In broadband, meaning conventional cable or air broadcast, all channels are distributed all over. In the air, this is only limited by the FCC but on cable it is limited by the line, amplifiers, distance and many other factors. So every channel reaches every subscriber. In SDV, each subscriber notifies central what it wants to watch and the switch is made there, yes, taking a fraction of second more, but now your location is only getting what it is viewing. Opens the distribution system to a lot more capacity. Capiche?
With hope that this helps for any cable company and any device as it is sure to be universal in many respects. |

BifmacPremium join:2004-01-15 Keyport, NJ | I'm interested in buying a Ceton device, thanks for the great explanation. Just 2 quick questions:
1) When you refer to "adapter box" in Step 1, are you referring to a Tuning Adapter? 2) Is a Tuning Adapter required if you don't have any premium channels? I currently have a TiVo and I don't require a Tuning Adapter to receive all my channels.
Thanks again for the info! |

I have the Ceton without the TA's (not all digital yet here just don't have the extras). The internal card I have needs to be setup thru Media Center. That being said all the info for it can be found with the diagnostic program they supply with it.
Have fun. |

It's needed if your area has analog channels above basic. Honestly, if I were you I wouldn't bother with the tuning adapter right now. Just get your card and have them pair it. In a few months once your system goes all digital you wont need the tuning adapter anyway.
It's pretty clear they have abandoned SDV because areas that use it have not gotten new HD channels in like a year. So even with SDV they seem to be squeezed for bandwidth and that seems to be why they are starting to convert more areas to all digital. Once that happens the tuning adapter will be useless and you will get a bunch of new HD channels that some areas already have. (that aren't even available with the tuning adapter) |

Certain Sports packages or language channels along with any premium channels (HBO Showtime ect). I have a cable card SG HR tuner and I get most of the premiums without a tuning adapter. In fact there are very few premiums that require a tuning adapter. I have found I can find most movies on the SDV channels, to record, fairly easily on a non-SDV channel. Here is the iO FAQ on SDV.

Thanks again for the info! A quick easy answer to your question: if you dont need a tuning adapter now on your Tivo, you wont need it with the Ceton either, provided you dont add anything..
Also - on all-digital areas, it no longer seems to be required for premium channels.. But likely needed for the foreign language channels, and sports packs. |

Is there a FAQ for getting started with the Ceton/HDHomerun products? Or is it really as simple as plug and play (few things are )? |

| You use them the same with any cable company, so the best FAQs would be the SiliconGraphics and Cetons product FAQs.
You can start with a comparison of the different tuners then go to their sites and read about what you need for the tuner.

rtbond join:2007-11-28 Hopatcong, NJ 1 edit | reply to Bifmac My experience with several SiliconDust HDHomeRun Prime installations is that most of the problems are Microsoft Windows Media Center related. SiliconDust has documented most of these at the FAQ below.
You should install using the latest SiliconDust firmware and client software found on their website.
Please note, however, that there appears to be a Cablevision specific problem associated with the HDHomeRun Prime that results in intermittent bogus "Subscription Required" messages. SiliconDust has investigated the issue and placed a watchdog timer in the current firmware to clear the trouble (an unresponsive (stalled) M-CARD), but this is a band-aid and not a fix. SiliconDust claims there is an inherent issue with the NDS M-CARD used by Cablevision that is the source of the trouble. SiliconDust has indicated they opened a trouble ticket with NDS (now part of Cisco) as a result of their testing. Until NDS releases new firmware to address this M-CARD behavior, Cablevision HDHomerun Prime users have to live with the occasional bogus "Subscription Required" message. I have had one or two recordings that failed because of this problem over the course of 3 months.

I wonder who you got for a tech....As of the 3rd they know what a HD Home Run is...at least when I call: "Do you still have the HD home run?"
As far as the SDV adapter....I have very basic cable (no HBO, cinemax, sports, etc) and have yet to encounter a channel I can't get to. My main issue was the first couple days that each day I would eventually go back to "basic" cable - channels 2 - 21 (i believe). I would have to call them and they would reset. Reboot HD home run and all was good. It's been two weeks *knock on wood* without any issues.
If I tune to a channel I don't get sometimes I recieve a "subscription required" or "channel blocked" (something to that effect) but otherwise I've been very happy with the unit. |

Very happy with Windows Media Center. Don't miss the CV boxes one bit! I am with jaa. HD home run prime user with an older desktop running Windows 7 Pro for media center. It was a breeze to setup and silicon dust has really nailed down the firmware. Originally some bumps along the way but been running smooth for a couple months now. Wife even approves and commented on the CV boxes and how slow they were when she was visiting her friends house.
Once you go to media center you wont ever want to go back to the old CV boxes.
Things are about to get even better once Ceton releases their echo extender. Cant wait to get a couple of those to complete the whole house DVR without any monthly recurring fees!!! |
