quick question, especially for those in the electric industry. i have a murray load center which has mostly type MP-T breakers installed. some moron in the past installed a square D 20A breaker (too lazy to buy a murrary brand device) and thus the panel is not currently within warranty specs. i want to replace this breaker.
i know that siemens bought murray and the siemens QP breakers will fit (in fact are identical to murray MP-T breakers except for the label). however, I would like to keep breakers with the murray name on them to keep within warranty (and theoretical UL) specs.
looking at home depot, I noticed that the murray single pole 20A breaker (part number MP120) is now sold as type QP rather than MP-T. can I just use this breaker even though the panel doesn't technically say type QP breakers are compatible? i can't even find a place that will sell me the MP120 in the type MP-T format. has siemens just changed the label stuck on the breakers to make it uniform across both the murray and siemens brands?
related note, anyone know where I could look if the siemens type QP are UL classified to go into a murray panel which accepts type MP?

| I had a very interesting email conversation with Siemens engineering regarding this situation. I was putting together the "ultra, uber, mega" residential breaker cross reference list. No guessing or "it fits" - I only added items that were 100% listed.
The long and short of it is this. You may use Murray breakers in most Siemens panels, however, Siemens breakers ARE NOT listed to be used in Murray panels.
Made in the same factory, on the same line, to the exact same specs? Yes!
You know, I know, and every inspector knows that the Murray and Siemens product line are identical in every way (I even once received a Murray GFCI breaker in a Siemens clamshell).
That being said, the Murray Q products do replace the MP. You are 100% complaint to use the Murray Q's.
If it were MY house, I would stick a Siemens breaker in there and be done with it.
Cutler-Hammer also makes a CL breaker which is listed for both Murray and Siemens panels.
The people at Siemens were kind enough to send me their UL letters for several different brands (Crouse-Hinds, Arrow-Hart, ITE, Gould, etc...), which was extremely helpful in putting together my cross reference list.
