Best Router Setup for FIOS internet only? I have FIOS internet and phone service (no TV). Originally, it was installed using the existing coax from the ONT to a Westell router. Yesterday, I ran ethernet. I would prefer to use my Netgear WNDR4500. Do I need the Westell router at all? I've read the tradeoff FAQ, but none of the options has the Westell completely removed. What's my best option?

If you not using TV why do you need the Westell router just attach ONT - CAT5 - ROUTER = done.

reply to Budge I am in the same boat. I have Fios Internet only 20/5 speed for 44.95. I am one that got Fios internet from day one in my neighborhood and the speeds started at 10/2 then up to 20/5. Anyway the router I use is Asus WL-520GU with Toastman version of Tomato firmware. It's working well for me. I still have the Verizon Actiontec Rev A. router they gave me sitting on the shelf powered off as my back up. This Asus router seems to serve me well although I like one with a faster processor like RT-N16 or similar any other brand but can't make a purchase for the time being.

Thanks. What settings did you have to carry over from the Actiontec to your new router? Or was it mostly plug-and-play?

Well I didn't really carry over any settings (especially the blocked port for Actiontec updates) since its using DHCP on the WAN. The only thing I did was to release and quickly turn off the WAN on the Actiontec so that when I plug the wan on the Asus there would be no problem otherwise you have to wait like 2 hours before the new router gets IP address or you have to call Verizon to tell them to release you IP address and then you have to explain why. I wanted WPA2 wireless security and SSH and that is why I went with Tomato firmware (dont know what the newer ActionTec's have). I have four or five devices that get Flash and windows media TV live feeds and I still have bandwidth to spare. Sometimes I think the router can't keep up but I am not getting the symptom consistent enough to verify that its the CPU in the router that can't keep up.

That's because there is no need for dual routers with an internet only configuration. As others have said, just connect your router directly to the ONT. »Verizon Online FiOS FAQ »Replacing the Actiontec (part 1): Coax to Ethernet

reply to Budge Thank you everyone. I called to make the switch from coax to ethernet. Once that was running smoothly, I disconnected the ONT backup battery and popped the red (+) lead off the battery. While the ONT was disconnected, I switched out the routers. I was hoping the ONT would give my new router an IP address on reboot. But after 30 minutes, I called Verizon and got them to push me one. Works great. Thanks again.
