 | [Rant] Police LED lights A few nights ago I almost ran over a cop. Why? It was because his (and his 7 other friends) strobe lights were so bright that I could not see him or his flash light in the middle of the road way. After being yelled at and threatened with a trip to jail I responded with "If you were not blinding us with your lights I would have seen you" His response was "That's called Officer Safety!"
I understand the need to warn people but with lights that leave spots in your eyes that becomes a serious problem. I can only imagine what it does to people with poor vision. -- I do not, have not, and will not work for AT&T/Comcast/Verizon/Charter or similar sized company. |

IMO someone should be able to sue them for eye damage. |
|
 | reply to battleop I completely agree. Their lights are too bright now (even one car) at night. If there are no oncoming cars I have no issue using my high beams to shine some additional light on the road.
A sunny day their lights are not an issue, but there is no reason to use the same amount of strobing power at night where ambient light does not exist.
I have occasionally seen a cop only use the rearward facing lights when pulling over cars. This works great for oncoming traffic, and that's it. |

| reply to swhitney2003 Most of these lightbars have a wire that controls a low power options specifically for this reason, It to be used at night when on the side of the road but sadly they almost never get hooked up to a switch, and even if they do no one uses them.
Its relatively as bright as the bar looks in the day with the sun out and still very visible. -- ASUS M4A79T Deluxe | AMD Phenom II x3 720 BE AM3 w/4 Cores @ 3.41Ghz(OC) | 4Gb DDR3 Memory @ 1600mhz | Sapphire ATI HD4870 1GB 800mhz/1000mhz(OC) | 2x500GB HDD's Raid 0 | Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Build 7600 (RTM) | Windstream DSL 12m (14.9m Sync)/766k |

 | reply to DarkLogix said by DarkLogix:I'll have to remember that, hit high beams at cops. Um nevermind. To me it's safer than hitting an officer because I can't see him. High beaming someone on foot is different than someone driving. Take note this is in areas without street lamps... complete darkness besides the moon (if present) and blue strobes. |

Now If due to their lazyness (of not hooking up the low power wire) then I might win the case.
Sorry he got hit at 65mph but it was his own fault. Darwin awards will then have claimed yet another. |
|
 | I wouldn't say its the officers fault, its the departments for not hooking it up or company that outfits the vehicle. |

 | reply to slcpd6469 "Manual intervention is available at any time to turn dimming on or off so officers can control the light output at any time."
I bet it is common for them to turn it off if they know about it. -- I do not, have not, and will not work for AT&T/Comcast/Verizon/Charter or similar sized company. |

Now my friends all told me later how that scared the shit out of them. Unfortunately for me I have Epilepsy and I went down with a seizure right there.
For me it went from 9pm on a Friday night to 6am Saturday - all in a blink of an eye. In fact it took me until late Sunday to really fully recover. And I missed work for the entire weekend.
Since then I have had other close calls while in a car, or even talking with friends on the street.
I agree with what the officer said that they need to look at officer safety, but there is a large part of the community that can and do suffer severely for it.

So harming innocent civilians due to their carelessness should warrent a firing. |

as Ron white said "you can't fix stupid" a cop that causes someone to have a seizure should pay a fine and lose their job. |

exocet_cmI am the law - Judge DreddPremium join:2003-03-23 New Orleans, LA kudos:2 | reply to battleop Some of the light bars used on LE vehicles will auto-dim once the headlights are turned on.
A lot of the light bars, and most of the dash/deck lights that I use and have seen in use, don't offer that option. In my particular setup, all of my LEDs (Whelen and Strobes-N-More) have no such option to dim. They are on/off/flash pattern/sync.
Now, unlike most, there are a few LEOs that take in account driver safety when utilizing warning lights. I don't turn on my front lights if I'm warning traffic behind my vehicle if I don't need the front lights (keeps rubber-necking down, prevents blinding oncoming traffic). -- "I have measured out my life with coffee spoons..." - T.S Eliot "I have often regretted my speech, never my silence." - Publilius Syrus Ma blog: »www.johndball.com |
