Just Upgraded to 150/35 What to expect?

Just got off the phone with someone from billing about an hour ago and I upgraded from the 50/20 plan I was on to the 150/35 plan. She said a tech will have to come out to install the new router cause it's a gigabit capable router, and to also make sure my lan card is gigabit ready which I checked because I just built my computer January of last year and it is gigabit ready and capable. Other than that, I Noticed while doing some downloads from usenet I max out at 10.60 MB/s is that accurate or will things be higher once the new router is being used?. What else will the tech guy be doin besides installing the new router, anything?. I ran a speedtest and am getting these results, but I'll see tomorrow after the new router is installed if things increase. Thanks for the feedback.

You're definitely being limited by your old router. You should be seeing ~18-19MB/sec downloads from usenet and ~150/60 on the speedtest.

If your router is already connected via CAT5, then switching out the router is the only thing the tech will do. If you're currently using MoCA for WAN, he'll have to run a CAT5 cable.

You don't say what router you have or whether it's connected via MOCA or cat5. You also don't indicate what ONT you have. I'm assuming you are testing wired, not wireless since you said you had a gigabit nic.

If your router is an Actiontec rev. A-F or a Westell, you should be getting close to 100Mbps down. 10Mbps indicates a problem. The router is probably not auto-negotiating 100Mbps correctly and is falling back to 10Mbps.

Also, if you have a model 610 ONT, that will need to be replaced as it is limited to 29Mbps up.

edit:
I misread the OP. 10.6MB = 84.8Mbps which is acceptable for a 100Mbps router (thanks rebus9 See Profile).

Don't confuse MB (megaBYTES) with Mb (megaBITS).

If you are seeing 10.60 MB/sec, that is equivalent to just under 85 Mbps.

Now 10.60 Mbps on a 50/20 connection does seem low.

Right now I'm using a MI424WR-GEN2 Version F Model router, still wating for the guy to come out and install the new one. How can I tell if I'm using MoCA for WAN?

Do you have a cat5 connection from the ONT to your router? The main status page in the router will display "Broadband connection (coax)" or "broadband connection (ethernet)".

In either case, the rev. F is limited to 100Mbps.

The model number is on the inside of the ONT. Simply open the customer access cover.

If you have a rev. F, you're unlikely to be on a 610 ONT. 610s were used in the very early rollout of FIOS.

it says you're using coax, so he needs to do ethernet, and you also want to make sure you have a gigabit ethernet card in your machines, and/or wireless n capable cards in your pc's.

and then I think you are supposed to get the rev g or I router.

He's runnin the cable now he had to drill a new hole. But first he wanted to verify if my ONT box had to be replaced or not cause I brought it up and asked him about it. But he said it's using the new parts just inside a old box, and that is 10/100/1000 capable. Also the router he gave me is a Actiontec MI424WR-REV I. And also I checked that my ethernet card is gigabit capable, because I just built my system last year, and its a RTL8111E card.

The tech is gone, he got everything setup, had to restart the pc cause it wasnt loading sites at first. But he was using speakeasy to do the speedtest, I told him to try speedtest.net and got better results, he was testing to washington dc and i normally test to clifton, nj on speedtest.net cause im from nj, but anyway..here are some results

When you upgrade to 150/35 do you have to pay another install or trock roll fee to have them install the new ONT/router?

From what other users have said that had their BPON replaced with a GPON they did not have to pay any extra fee. Pretty amazing as Comcast charges upto $500 to install their 105mb service.

They will not charge you anything. But usually getting the equipment changed means changing your plan, which means you need to sign a new contract - within this contract they charge you and credit you on the first bill. Still the whole process is free of charge to the customer.

I love it as well:
running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 65.79Mb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 151.34Mb/s

I just don't use it 99% of the time I believe lol.
