[AZ] What can I do to get MORE?

To start;
Cox HSI Only, Ultimate 50/5
On average this is what my test looks like;Download Speed: 62.414 Mbps (7.8 MB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 4.735 Mbps (0.6 MB/sec transfer rate)
The closest server located in Sunnyvale, CA performed this test with a latency of 34 milliseconds.
Test Date: Tue May 08 2012 00:53:17 GMT-0700 (US Mountain Standard Time)

My complaint? I want more bandwidth. I have an on-site server for personal use (freelance videography, photography, and some programming) and I keep a lot of my files available for instant access. I'm really hating on my upload speeds. Among lots of other things.

The Cox tech that came for my "pro install" advised that Cox Business had a speed tier 150/50 - I tried to get it ordered and a rep told me that because they had too many people on the node in an area, they could not uncap me to 150/50 - best they would do is Cox Business line, said they would run a special cable (I call BS on that!) and guarantee a 50/5 line for me. I see nothing wrong with my residential line so far so I declined on the Business 50/5.

Am I just out of luck? I'd really, really, like to get some higher rates...

Centurylink, to my extreme disappointment, is not available where I moved to. I had to kiss the 20mbps upload goodbye.. And nobody has internet like I enjoy at ASU.

First its gonna be a little while before you see cox providing speeds faster then 5mbps on the upload. As this point, if internet speeds matter this much to you. You need to move to a location that offers FTTH, someone like Verizon FIOS. Trust me there is plenty of us on here, who would love faster speeds on the upload. But we know how things are, and this is the same kind of problem you will run into having internet service with an cable ISP. Cox, and many other cable ISP's have been working on upstream bonding that will enable them to provide faster upload speeds in the future. Still that is something that's gonna take a little time to happen.

TheShoura,

Have you checked out the Cox Optical Internet product? They offer a 100Mbps Ethernet connection which would get you the bandwidth you're looking for or there's Cox Private Line which offers an OC-3 connection which would get you a 155.65 Mbps optical circuit. It might be a good idea to call Cox Business at 623-322-2000 and see what options might work best for you.

The Cox Business Internet also has some good tiers that run over the HFC network.

Thanks,

Agreed, having competition keeps things in tact, which is why ISP's don't want it. They rather have us paying for caps and crap.

When PRISM comes here, I might be switching, been hearing a lot of good reviews on it.

It really is pathetic that my mobile internet connection has a better Upload rate than my ultimate HSI. It should be the other way around. The reason has nothing to do with channel bonding.

Thanks,

I called in and was told optical lines are available to less than 20% of Arizona commercial locations and not at all available to residential locations. Was basically told the same thing; "business" service, or just keep what you got.

Out of luck?

@cox.net

Yes, your pretty much out of luck. What you're asking for is beyond the scope of a residential service.

Sometimes you can get a second residential line and bridge the connections in Windows.

Even if you co-located your server you're going to get great download, but putting stuff up on it will be slow, unless you make a trip with a HDD every week or so to the data center and transfer it...

You definitely don't want Optical Fiber Internet from Cox. It is crazy expensive. Speeds are symmetrical and dedicated, but it's still insane. The rep I spoke with justified the pricing because Cox needs to install $8,000 worth of CPE at your location to support the connection. Here's the pricing I was given when I looked into it 3 months ago:

3Mbps -- $700/month (3-yr contract)
5Mbps -- $990/month (3-yr contract)
Install Charge -- $500

Speeds of 100Mbps+ are offered, but I was afraid to ask how much they charge for that. I'm guessing their 100/100 service costs around $2,500/month or more. Presumably they don't charge $145/mo for each additional 1Mbps.

Also, I was offered additional business tiers delivered over cable modem, but again the pricing was unrealistic. Here's the specifics:

50/5 -- $299/month
25/15 -- $319/month
50/15 -- $399/month

I didn't go with either of these products for my business. We switched to FiOS instead and we get 35/35 for $125/mo. I'm going to upgrade that sucker to 300/65 once the new tiers are rolled out to businesses.

At home, I also have Cox HSI Ultimate 50/8. Although, in reality, the actual speed is closer to 64/12. I've been waiting patiently for Cox to roll out 100Mbps home internet, but as usual they do everything in half-measures. The recent upstream bump from 5Mbps to 8Mbps was a welcome change, but it's really a joke. For power users, 8Mbps is nothing. I'd gladly pay Cox $200/month if they could deliver 100/20 (double the current speed for double the current price). Alas, that's just wishful thinking on my part.

Even more frustrating is the fact that FiOS is available at my home address, and I'd gladly switch to FiOS in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, they only offer crappy FiOS VDSL2 at my address (max speed 50/10) -- no thanks.

I'm paying for Ultimate and am getting capped/limited very agresively to 55/5 streaming.. not particularly happy about that. I wasn't even offered anything more citing that its just not available regardless of cost

Rather upset and disgusted about this because Cox has a monopoly on my area and I'm in the middle of town... And sometime last year I got a letter from City Councel explaining that they shut down the street I live on for a few months because they were laying down new fiber lines under the street (and had intermittent internet during that time but Cox cust. care insisted that that had nothing to do with it. Techs came out but did nothing for me until i just waited a month or two and it stopped.) Wish better options were available!

Is there a map of available FIOS areas?
Also, does anyone know about googles's internet launches? I know they are coming to Gainesville and Kansas City (two Cox markets..)

While Gainesville is a Cox market, I could not find a reference to Google Fiber coming to Florida. Could you share your source?

Also, while we serve a good portion of Kansas, we do not serve the Metro Kansas City area.

Humm, then ks.ks.cox.net isn't Kansas City??

when I read this:»fiber.google.com/about/ back in the development stages, it read gainesville would be a target.

according to the map, it looks like all over if it gets completed.
This means, we'd have a choice and it be great if google offered voice and TV (since someone in my house still watches tv) and hopefully, unmetered internet if it ever gets to ft walton. Been with you guys a long time and your almost out of my price range.

Cox's central hub for Kansas is Wichita. Cox serves the Wichita metro and Topeka I believe. Manhattan also (I think).

In general, FiOS exists where Verizon is the ILEC, or one of the secondary buyers of Verizon territory (FairPoint, or Frontier). And nowhere near everywhere in any of those companies' footprints.

You will not find FiOS (a Verizon product/service) anywhere that the ILEC is either AT&T or CenturyLink (though AT&T has their FTTN "U-verse" and CenturyLink their VDSL "Prizm").

I see cleveland is a market, I'm curious to find out if TWC there will offer caps like they are doing in Texas. I know my aunt has TWC and loves it. If we ever move there, I'm getting the 35 up meg plan so I can host a private ice cast audio server.
