Bulged and Non-Bulged capicitors

Just thought I'd drop a note in about my observations while repairing a LCD computer monitor with bad caps.

When I opened it up I noticed several bulging & leaking caps, and quite a few more that looked just fine.

Doing the intelligent thing I just shotgunned them all. On post removal analysis I found that all the bad appearing caps were definitely bad. The part that should be of interest to some is that I also found that most of the caps that looked good were also just as bad.

This one happened to be a Gateway FPD2185W monitor, while a very nice monitor, to repair it you have to go in through the screen, and it takes some time and effort to get in and out. I really didn't want to have to go back in again!

The moral of this story is if it's got some bad, go ahead and plan that the rest are bad as well!

How did the caps fail? What did you use to test them? An LC something from Sencore?

I used a simple LCR meter which showed them to have lost most of their capacitance and to have a high dissipation factor.

The biggest group of these were 470uf's that measured typically less than 10uf @120hz and a D factor of 0.900 or greater. Of the group one of the obviously bulged caps tested the best, at 103uf and a D of 0.560.

For those not familiar with the D factor a good electrolytic will have a D reading of less than .1, preferably less than .05.

Thanks for the info. I've generally just shotgunned them all too, since it's only a few bucks more to do it while you're in there, and shipping seems to be as much as the caps.

yes, they might be the same make. it seems bad caps made from that stolen incomplete formula are still being made. can you give the make, and what country made them?. it's probably on the badcaps website.

These are SAMXON GF(M) UDA 470uf 25V caps for the majority. Of all of that particular cap 100% failed in testing..

SAMXON, especially the GF series, have a bad history. »www.badcaps.net/forum/search.php···=2118102 i searched for SAMXON GF just in case the link won't give the proper search.
