[northeast] New FIOS sub-neet to request Cat-5 from ONT in advan

I've just signed up for FIOS in Washington DC.

I've read about the various configurations, and I'd like to use one of the variants that provide Cat-5 from the ONT to my router, rather than using the Fios-supplied router for my internet access.

Do I need to request that specifically before the installation or is it something I can tell the tech when s/he arrives?

Re: [northeast] New FIOS sub-neet to request Cat-5 from ONT in a

It's best to request it directly from the install tech.
There's really no way for the ordering CSR to request an ethernet install other than in the order notes, which usually gets overlooked.

If you're getting FIOS-TV, you will still need the Actiontec behind your router to provide guide data and VOD.
See options 6 and 7 in the following FAQ for tradeoffs.
»Verizon Online FiOS FAQ »What are the tradeoffs between the various router configurations

A cat5 install is up to the discretion of the install tech. It's best to run the cat5 for your router in advance. If installing a cat5 WAN connection creates more work for the install tech, the install tech may refuse the request.

Thanks. I have two Tivos so won't have a lot of need for Guide data. VOD maybe, but I'll have them follow install 6.

As for the Cat-5, it's already there going to my existing cable modem. I can get a longer cable, but really he should be able to take the Cat-5 out of the cable modem and plug it into the ONT and be done. (Or am I missing something, like a special Verizon specific termination on the Cat-5?)

Is the cable modem currently located near the service point of entry? The ONT is typically mounted outside or inside near your existing utilities (power meter, cable, etc). If the cable modem is in a room somewhere else in the house, then you'll have to run CAT5 to wherever the installer decides to place the ONT. If they want to place the ONT outside, then you'll definitely be running CAT5 outside.

Yes. I have a patch panel in the basement where all the cables enter the house (phone, cable, electric). The existing Demarc is inside, about 3 feet from the patch panel.

I have a similar question/problem. Verizon has finally gotten around to running fiber into my Condo. The fiber was placed in a bedroom closet (the ONT has not yet been installed). To power the ONT (if I order service) they will need to drill through a wall to the bathroom that is next to the closet. The phone wires will need to be run from a raiser located at the other end of the room. My computer is in the basement and the TV is in the living room (no where near the bedroom). Why they did not just place the access point in the basement (near to the phone wire run from their patch panel) I do not know. My Phone wire (as noted) runs into my basement from the Patch Panel in the common area so the wire would be easy to splice into the ONT which could be powered by a socket in the basement. My current Cable TV and Internet coax enters from a wall in the basement and runs along the ceiling to where it is needed and for the TV then through the floor of the room above. Right now it looks like there is going to be too much trouble if I want to get FIOS (for anything except for my phone) since the location of the ONT will require massive coax runs.

You may have to have them do there Normal Install via Ethernet to where you will have your Router. Once they are done then you will have to reconfigure it for Option 6.

1) Why would they not do it? Laziness/company policy?
2) If they don't how hard is it to reconfigure myself?

1) As I stated before:

2) You can run the cat5 yourself. You would have to call VZ to change the provisioning in the ONT. »Verizon Online FiOS FAQ »Replacing the Actiontec (part 1): Coax to Ethernet

Verizon techs are not trained to do the work you request. It also is not part of the install. Verizon trains the employees to install the Verizon equipment, not yours.
