[Cable] Technicolor replaces DCM475 with DCM476 in lineup

Just interesting to note that Technicolor has replaced the DCM475 modem with the DCM476. The DCM475 is no longer listed on their main website.

There doesn't seem to be much difference between the two. The only thing I found was that DCM475's receive function has two separate 32MHz capture windows (according to Technicolor dual tuners) while the DCM476 has a single 96MHz capture window.

Datasheets:
DCM475
DCM476

It may be the 'only' difference but it does have significant repercussions on costs, power and flexibility.

So is it a change for the better or worse?

For cablecos that bunch up all their QAMs anyhow, the lower sticker price would be a good thing. For cablecos that spread their QAM groups all over the spectrum, the 476 might not be able to go beyond 4D bonding because other QAMs are out of range.

Since cablecos should welcome this new opportunity to cut their CPE costs, those that currently have scattered QAMs will likely make an effort to pack them more tightly to leverage single-tuner modems.

So, no difference for the consumer side, then? I mean, if you were going to buy a cable modem, no reason to hold out for a 476 if you can get a 475 quickly?

First step to getting a 476 would be to wait for it to get on the incumbent cableco's approved list, which could take a while. How much cheaper and more power-efficient it might be is pointless until then.

Teksavvy already lists it on their site as one of their approved modems.

Actually it appears that TSI is already selling DCM476 in Rogers territory.

Anyone have experience with the DCM476? I just ordered one to replace my 475 that is losing range and disconnecting sporadically throughout the day.

I was hoping someone replies to you (soon).

I can buy either one but the 475 is a bit cheaper (only b'cuz of shipping cost of the 475 supplier).
