| What's the point of the Diablo games? This is not a troll post, I am genuinely curious, seeing as how D3 is getting release in 10 days.
I bought D1 and D2 (with the expansion I think?) in the form of a battlechest some 1 or 2 years ago. I didn't bother with D1 as I couldn't tolerate the graphics (I know it's shallow, and I've reacted vehemently to people saying the same thing to me about SC1, but let's move on) and tried D2.
The lack of a narrative sort of put me off, but I managed to play for about 20 levels.
According to a video I've seen on IGN, by the end of D2, Diablo wasn't dead but two of the soulstones were destroyed. (You need to destroy all three to kill Diablo?) I also recall some moron named Merrius who acts stupidly all the time (though Bale kills him I think?).
So the status of the story at the end of D2 is that all three of the prime evils are dead, as well as two of the lesser ones, which would mean that in D3, there only remains one lesser evil, and Diablo himself.
Am I up to date on the story?
My understanding is that the Diablo games are all about button smashing your way through dungeons to get loot, better loot, and more loot.
What's the point of all this loot? I read D3 won't have any PvP at launch, so what's supposed to entice me to get the best gear?
If any Diablo fans can shed a light on this, I'd be grateful. |

1. Selling gear and commodities on the Real Money Auction House. I'm sure that you can make back the cost of the game and perhaps a bit more.
2. Tyrael (»diablo.wikia.com/wiki/Tyrael) is a badass.
3. The Book of Cain really has me drawn into the story, and I'm definitely excited to see what's around the corner.
4. The cinematics are amazing. -- "If it can't be done with brains, it can't be done with hours" - Clarence "Kelly" Johnson |

 | reply to TigerLord Really, what's the point of any game?
For me it's just a release from reality. Something to do that helps you temporarily escape from the rigors of life. If you're somebody like me that spends months at a time away from your family it's a great time killer.
I know this really has nothing to do with your original question about Diablo, but it really applies to all games. Basically play whatever game makes you happy, and if that's D3 then knock yourself out. |

Shatter join:2006-07-24 Waterford, MI | reply to TigerLord I never played D1 or D2 but I have pre-ordered D3. Im tired of TOR and I need something to play between now and GW2 so I did some research on D3. The reason I plan to play is its largely soloable, I look forward to working through the tiers of difficulty and gearing up to advance to the next tier easier. While its not really an MMO per say gearing is a critical part of the game and I think the market will be a fun aspect. I think it will be interesting enough to hold me for a while and considering I dont even want to login to TOR right now... |

 | reply to Archivis said by Archivis:The question is, is button mashing with a handful of friends going to be fun or not? Eh, I don't know. Although you certainly can't tell from the Beta, I don't think the game is going to be as much of a button-masher as you're thinking.
Diablo 2 was a whole lot of fun with a group of friends. I think D3 will be even more fun than D2 was.
I suppose we'll see in a week. I'm just about pissing myself in anticipation. |

ArchivisYour DaddyPremium join:2001-11-26 Earth kudos:18 | If that is the case, then I'm going to form a chinese gold farmers guild amongst DSLR folks. We farm all day and I give everyone a fair cut of the dungeon-run work.
Also, I will probably put together a D3 thread in a few days to get DSLR folks interested in coming together in a single place if they have no where else to go. -- A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have. |
