 | Compatible DVRs? Other than Tivo, what DVRs are compatible with FIOS, and what are the advantages and disadvantages? I'm looking for a multi-room setup with 1 DVR and a total of 4 TVs.
Thanks in advance! |

Thanks in advance! Moxi was, but they are no longer sold to consumers. Your next option would be windows media center with a cable card tuner and extenders. You would have a PC as the main DVR/server and extenders as the clients in the other rooms. The only extender currently on the market is the XBOX 360. You can still find old, used extenders on ebay, but they are less responsive than the XBOX 360. There is a new updated extender set to be released by the end of this year, the ceton echo. »cetoncorp.com/products/echo/
Your options for tuners for the main PC are: Hauppage WinTV-DCR-2650 (2 tuners) »www.hauppauge.com/site/products/···650.html Silicon Dust HDHomeRun Prime (3 tuners) »www.silicondust.com/products/hdh···n/prime/ Ceton InfiniTV 4 PCIE or USB (4 tuners) »cetoncorp.com/products/
Ceton is also projected to release, before Christmas, a 6 tuner turnkey media center dvr called the "Q" »cetoncorp.com/products/ceton_q/
Tivo, on the other hand, is projected to release an extender like device that could be combined with the Premiere XL4 to create a similar setup. »www.slashgear.com/tivo-whole-hom···8216141/
Current Media Center Advantages: -No monthly fee -implementable today
Current Tivo advantages: -cheaper upfront cost (with subscription) -tech support is with one company only (media center issues could be any component in the PC) |

 | reply to Seems_t Thanks for all the info! Pulling together a Windows Media Center rig is probably more money and effort than I really want to go to. The Ceton Q certainly looks interesting, although I can't imagine it will be inexpensive. Will probably have to pony up for the Verizon DVR and STBs for the time being, but that $2.00 price increase per DVR/STB in July will increase the rental fee to $41.99/month. Sheesh! |

| Here is another alternative. This is a completely independent, networked device that allows you to watch TV from any computer connected to your home LAN.

Thanks in advance! You a new subscriber? As a new subscriber in our new house they were offering a Free Multiroom DVR for life as the promo. You get the $20 credit for the DVR and just pay for the boxes.... Much better deal than a MCE box or something else you cobble together. |
|
 | Yes, I plan on being a new subscriber. They finished installing the distribution boxes in March, and the contractors thought service would be available in approximately 30 days once testing was finished. No mailers, so far, and I check online for service availability embarrassingly frequently!
When I look at online deals in an adjacent neighborhood, the only offers are are for a Visa gift card (either $250 or $500, depending on level of service), or a 12-month credit for FIOS Spanish service. When service is available I'll call and see if they'll offer anything different than the online deals. The free DVR for life would certainly be nice if I can get it. The $500 GC for the Ultimate package is tempting - at the current price of $114/month I'd have a significantly better package than when I get from Comcast for the same price, and with a $500 GC as well. |

Reyr join:2009-01-03 Wilmington, DE | Chances are service is already available in your neighborhood. There has been instances of when the hardware is already all there, but the database on active service is months behind. You may want to call them, and tell them the info you posted here. They've been known to send out a tech to check it out, and do installs even though they are not advertising yet. |

 | Thanks for the suggestion! Just called, and the rep couldn't tell when we would have service, but he put a request into engineering and said he would get back to me with a date within 24 - 72 hours. I'm a little skeptical, but, hey, you never know! |
|
 | reply to Reyr Well, here's the very prompt response I received from Verizon Direct:

I reached out to engineering who advised that they just need some jumpers run and FiOS should be ready to go at that address.
They will be doing the work and our database will be updated shortly to show you as FiOS capable.

While it still doesn't give me a timeframe, at least things seem to be moving in the right direction. |
