Re: Fun project with old weed wacker motor and battery? I have a small garden. I currently 'till' it by hand using that garden weasel claw tool thing. It doesn't take too long and isn't hard...but it kinda sucks. I've wanted a small tiller, maybe like this: »www.amazon.com/Joe-TJ600E-14-Inc···02IC1CBO But I would only use it once or twice a year, so kind of unnecessary.
Could you make that with your motor? I guess the blades may be hard to rig... maybe this: »www.amazon.com/Yard-Butler-RC-3-···n-garden with that motor hooked up...?
On the other hand, just found this; »www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-GC81···n-garden
which I wasn't aware of...
OR, a variation on motors and blades, make a 10 gallon blender and have a Huge Margarita Party. -- Don't Lie - Be Kind - Realize your Potential |

By the time they cut, edge, pluck weeds and clean the flower beds, it's about 1/2 hour. I'm very happy, and it's a reasonable cost - $35 for all that sounds great to me. Saves me a few hours on the weekend - time is money, and nothing is more precious than family time! |

Saves me a few hours on the weekend - time is money, and nothing is more precious than family time! Thanks for the info. We got some quotes last year but it was $50-65 per time here. Once a week we're talking $200 a month for the spring and $100 a month (every other week) the rest of the time. That's about $700 a year for us plus fall cleanup. It costs about $50 a year to maintain the equipment so we save $650 a year doing it ourselves minimum each year. Most of the time I mow the lawn at like 6-7am before anyone is awake so it's no loss of family time and that $650 goes a long way for extras for the family. If it was lower like yours I'd consider it. I do hate the New England area prices. |

said by Caledfwlch10:How big are your yards that take 30-45 minutes? Ours is about 1/2 an acre. I mow about four of 10 acres. The rest is hay. You can see the fence in the second picture. Of course, I don't have neighbors riding my ass if I let something go for a week or two. I mow it all in three hours, and if I really haul ass, I can clean around the fence in an hour.
As for time with the family - my 10 year old daughter helps out a lot, and not always with a smile - and my wife is out there sometimes, too, but never with a smile. However, I easily handle the workload of five Mexicans all by myself, and have plenty of time to work and enjoy life. The only reason I'm inside running my mouth now is because it's raining out there. |
|
 | Nice looking area. I could only dream of wide open space like that to mow. I hate dealing with trees, dog land mines, gates, fences, 25-29 degree hills, spots where you have to back out since there is no room to turn, etc. Half my mowing time is that stuff. |

It's all how you look at it. I enjoy doing this kind of yard work. My lawn is just less than 2 years old, and is by far the best one on my street already. I'm proud of that. It kind of a minor hobby. I mow when the grass needs it. Sometimes a weekend, sometimes during the week after work. It takes me about an hour, maybe a bit more, to trim and mow. Then my time is set aside for family or whatever else. |

I know a lot of people who enjoy it, and that's awesome - I'm sure your lawn is a lot nicer than mine.... It just works out to a handy excuse for me to get out of doing it.
Of course, the REAL hidden cost is the trade off I made with my wife. Since I get someone to take care of the outside, she wanted someone to take care of the inside... So now we have a cleaning service twice a month. That's the real cost! (and, frankly, I like that too. Nice having a spotless house!) |
|
 | I hate to ask but what does a cleaning service twice a month run? We've been thinking about that for a while just haven't looked into it yet. |

I'm paying $100 each time, flat rate. They do everything - scrub the kitchen and 3 bathrooms, clean all the other rooms, mop, dust, vacuum, mop, change linens, straighten up, etc. it's expensive but, for me, worth it! |

Yea it is expensive but not having to help do it or hear the wife complain is worth it. I guess I'll make some calls this week and see if I can get some quotes. I'm sure that's worth like 1 million brownie points with the wife. |

Come on bro...... man up and buy a gas trimmer. Echo if you can spring for it. Good advice. I laugh at these people who buy a string trimmer every single year. Echo trimmers are loved by pros. The users like the power/weight ratio and the people who maintain them can keep them going. I can make art with mine 6 years old... guess I should probably replace the plug and air filter sometime (usually just clean them).... |

Lurch77BBR BullyPremium join:2001-11-22 Oconto, WI kudos:4 | It's not good advice for me. I have no use for a gas machine for the little trimming I need to do. And every year? The B&D trimmer I broke is at least a decade old, and would still be going if I had not abused it. The new Toro cordless I bought will last at least that. People that are buying an electric trimmer every year would have even worse luck with a gasser. I don't need an 18 wheeler to do my pick up truck sized job. It's a waste of money. |
