Re: Gaming and Linux exactly and really if Valve starts to support Linux it might draw the others in out of simple competition.
I would love to see Blizzard support linux, and to me it would be stupidly simple for them to do so. they fully support OSX which means they have up to date OGL engines, and OSX is loosely a flavor of *nix so they are part way there really. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

So I think we are already see that happen, and they haven't even launched on linux yet. Soon as steam launches I am going to dual boot. Probably gonna have to get another HDD on black friday though. |

EA's stuff is very underwhelming for now, but its a start. EA is the evil empire... so if they're getting into it (as tepid as it may be) then there's got to be something there for them.
Good things for Linux gamers may be on the way... ...or a whole new generation of Linux DRM -- Everything in moderation... Including Moderation --Oscar Wilde |

me1212 join:2008-11-20 Pleasant Hill, MO | I think it means good things for us gamers. EA is not a company that would suddenly support linux unless they were certain there is money in it. |
|
KearnstdElf WizardPremium join:2002-01-22 Mullica Hill, NJ | There is that.
EA is certainly an evil company but it takes the big dogs on the block investing in something to get the smaller ones to see its worth the risk. EA and Valve have the money to risk a full court press on Linux. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

me1212 join:2008-11-20 Pleasant Hill, MO | If they start making money from linux games there will for certain be more companies to follow, as they will have seen these to giants do it. I have to wonder, what prompted this? I know Gabe hates the new windows metro but is that really it?
Honestly I have to wonder if the indie market didn't help with this, indirectly. The humble indie bundles are on all 3 OSes, and even beyond them there is minecraft. Love or hate it, I fall under the first, minecraft is very popular, even going so far as to break the sales record for xbox live games in only 24 hours.
Since the PC minecraft is written in java it can be played on any system. My personal feelings on java aside, lots of people play java on linux(heck even I have it on my linux box for just in case I need it), even the second most popular youtube channel for minecraft(minecraftftw) has a guy who uses ubuntu for minecraft. As I said, like it or hate it its a game that runs on linux, and with the small number of games on linux people with linux that want to game normally buy a game that they hear is good AND on linux.
Mojang and the smaller indie companies have been making money from linux, I have to wonder if valve and EA didn't see that and decide they want a piece of the pie. |

Love it or hate it, Ubuntu offers linux while being able to hide the Linux from the typical user. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

That'd be my guess. -- Everything in moderation... Including Moderation --Oscar Wilde |

me1212 join:2008-11-20 Pleasant Hill, MO | reply to Kearnstd Its no doubt that ubuntu is on the verge of doing that, every person I know that uses linux uses ubuntu, and never touches the terminal. I myself use mint, but thats derived from ubuntu so its almost doesn't count, granted since I have it on my server I do use the terminal quite a bit, but honestly I'm not good enough with the terminal yet to give up a GIU hence I use mint.
Ubuntu, and its derivatives, are bringing linux to the home front, and I for one love it. |

Ubuntu, and its derivatives, are bringing linux to the home front, and I for one love it. It seems that whenever I go to places with tech people, they all love and use Ubuntu too. Most are dual booting, or run it on a separate PC because they do gaming, or haven't taken the time out to do foo in Linux, but it seems to be just about everywhere. -- "Padre, nobody said war was fun now bowl!" - Sherman T Potter

Honestly theres not all that much difference between the linux distros. Personally I prefer mint to ubuntu, so if ubuntu takes off even more than it has thats really a good thing for linux as a whole. |

| Ubuntu is one approach, one with which many disagree. To have people equating one distribution with Linux in general or thinking it's representative of the rest is a troublesome prospect.
Wider adoption of Linux is a good thing, in my view, be it in the data center, desktop or embedded. That doesn't mean I think everyone should be using Ubuntu. |
|
me1212 join:2008-11-20 Pleasant Hill, MO | Regardless of if one agrees with the ubuntu approach its happening. Save for the computer literate people the vast majority of people who try linux choose ubuntu, and most people are can into computers go for ubuntu first. Personally I don't like that ubuntu is becoming the face of linux, but unless most of the linux community heavily pushes another distro or two towards the general public it may be too late to stop it. |
