Anon | Wildblue/Exede -Can i work from home? I am starting a new job and it is totally a remote job. I currently have HughesNet and am thinking of switching to Wildblue/Exede. I will need to do a lot of Goto-Meeting and remote desktop work. Can anyone tell me of their experience with working from home using Wildblue/Exede. Will i have any problems with speed, latency or download limits? Thanks! adkmtnman |

 | There is definite lag BUT it certainly is usable.
Turning down the color depth, lower resolution, turning off the background image etc. all help cutting down on lag.
I've got the slowest speed wildblue and using teamviewer remote desktop is painfully slow, however when I had the middle speed it was much better.
Ping times over wildblue had gone from 600ms to 1000 to 1600ms.
Exceede is supposed to be back to 600ms to 700ms again which will greatly improve on lag in theory. I did ask this same question prior to the site going down and the balance of replies from people using the service was that remote desktop worked quite well. |

Anon | I would be in beam 314. So I should be good, right? |
|
Anon | If not located in white area, then yes. You can check your zip code on Exede's site to see if one is in beam's footprint. Some areas of US they have not confirmed exact perimeter of beams.
I have no idea the nature of your business, but having a plan B is always a good idea, when using any satellite provider. |

It worked fine... didn't notice lag at all. |

 | Can you say more about VPN. How slow? I'll be on it all day. Even a little slow can be frustrating.
Also, does someone have a realiable site for testing speed and ping? Thanks! |
|
 | Being on it all day, will you need to be concerned about the monthly download limits? |

| reply to adkmtnman OLDSATUSER makes a great point. If the VPN tunnel is open, even if you are not sending data, there will be data flowing between you and the other end. You will smoke your DAP/FAP in short order. You may want to hold out for Hughes new system. The way they handle the FAP will probably work better for you.
If you don't understand the concept of FAP/DAP, then look around here and you will see what we are talking about. -- The proper way to break in a Harley: Grab a fist full of throttle, and ride it like you stole it!!! |

 | Yeah, i am concerned with the monthly download limit. I'm not sure 25GB would be enough. I start a new job in a little over a week and really don't want to have speed or data issues. It's heavy data processing and reporting. If i exceed the limit can i buy more or am i stuck for the rest of the month? The other option i have is to rent a small studio office 15 minutes away, but that is costly.
I appreciate every ones input and advice. Thanks! |

 | You are in a tough spot. Right now Viasat isn't enforcing caps, but at some point soon, they will. There is also no usage meter right now for customers to tell how much data they are using. No telling for sure if the new compression technology really makes a difference or not in usage, only speculation at this point. Then there is the issue of buying extra capacity. Viasat says it is going to be offered in the future, but speculation is it will be costly and in 1GB blocks. One thing for sure, if you do violate the cap, they will slow you down to a point where you won't be able to work at all (on video conferencing anyhow).
What you could consider is signing up for Exede now. If you run into data usage trouble when caps are enforced, you could always pay cancelation fees and look into other options at that point. That still might be a cheaper option than renting office space upfront. |

 | The office space is plan b. I have Exede coming on Tuesday. I'll give it a shot and see how it goes. I 'll talk to my new boss about my concerns with it and my plan b if it is too slow. I really don't care too much about cost at this point I just don't want to have problems with the new job. Thanks for your advice. |
|
 | Best of luck with the new job and please keep us posted how Exede works out for you! |

Good to hear.
VPN - Bandwidth usage for a VoIP connection over a VPN.
In ballparks if used 24x7, that's a little over 1 Gig/day...
I'd read the manual for user settings that affect retransmissions. Satellite has much longer latency, and VPN initial settings might assume user is on land based ISP.
I don't think you have have any issues...just have to RTFM for tips to reduce unneeded bandwidth.

If i exceed the limit can i buy more or am i stuck for the rest of the month? Right now the EXEDE DAP limits are not being enforced..By the time the usage counters are operational and being enforced, WB has a plan to allow users to buy extra usage, they are still working on the details, but earlier rumors suggested that customers will be able to purchase extra usage in 1gB increments for a price near $8.00/gB... |

 | Does anyone know if you can adjust vpn settings to make vpn and satellite more compatible, and if so how? I have read that you can, but never how it can be done, and how much improvement you can get? |
|
 | I've just had Exede installed. Much faster than hughesnet. I've been researching vpn clients, and it seems like the Cisco Anyconnect client works better then some others. Here's one link: »its.virginia.edu/network/vpn/
Does anyone have experience with this vpn client? |

 | said by adkmtnman:Cisco Anyconnect client works better then some others. When they say this:
Note: The Cisco AnyConnect Client may work better in high latency connections (satellite-based connection) or networks that have incompatibility problems with IPsec.
It's a no brainer...get it, and read the fine manual. |
