The old posts aren't around pending DSLR recovery but you may recall that I was in the process of moving to a Frontier market. That move is still pending but I got my POTS and DSL services installed at the new address.
Unfortunately the tech that came out informed me that residential service does not go higher than 3.0/384 in my market. They previously said it went up to 7mbit/s but that person was apparently lacking market specific information. I asked the tech what could be done and she said she'd put me in contact with a local rep who could get me 6.0/512 business class service for $55.
I took the initiative at this point and called them myself. Was told I could get 6.0/768 business service for $80/mo. I told them that was too much and asked what we could do about the price. Ultimately they agreed to $59.99/mo with a 3yr commitment. When the contract was sent to me it specified 6.0/1.0 service instead of the 768kbit/s upload that was previously discussed. As it turns out this is what I wound up being provisioned at:
Line Mode ADSL_G.dmt Data Path INTERLEAVED
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 6944 1152 Margin (dB) 21.3 7.0 Line Attenuation (dB) 26.2 12.5 Transmit Power (dBm) 18.0 12.1
So it worked out. 6mbit/s downstream is enough for HD video and 1mbit/s upstream is equivalent to my old 10/1 Verizon DSL. It's the same price too -- my dry loop VZ account was $59.99/mo. The loss of 4mbit/s of downstream is a bummer but not much can be done about that unless/until they upgrade our CO to ADSL2+ Maybe one day they will; this loop is certainly capable of higher speeds and would benefit from ADSL2+
Any thoughts on my numbers or my experience with Frontier? What have you all been doing to keep busy with the DSLR outage?
Edit:
Here's my old Verizon account. The loops are damn near the same; the Frontier one even has slightly less downstream attenuation. Pity they don't have ADSL2+ in my CO, I'd be flying. Here's hoping they get around to upgrading it one day!
Line Mode ADSL_2plus Data Path FAST Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 11768 1123 Margin (dB) 19.5 9.8 Line Attenuation (dB) 26.7 11.0 Transmit Power (dBm) 18.2 12.1
reply to Crookshanks Great to hear they gave you something decent! In my area they won't let residents get business service. Only Residential unless you have an actual office building/space on your property.
Meanwhile, I have been working on the FAQ updating it (mainly backend stuff) for Search Engines to pick up a little nicer on it.
I'm not sure I'm _supposed_ to have it. The local rep finally called me back and kept asking me over and over if I was a business. Told her no, I just need to telecommute into my job (which is true, incidentally) and needed the upload bandwidth for that. Not sure if she kept asking that because I should be paying more if I'm a business or if she was asking because I'm not supposed to have this level of service.
Regardless, they gave it to me and I have a signed contract so it's not likely they'll take it away! I could even get a fixed IP for $10 more a month though I'm not sure if I'm going to do that or not. It'd be nice to host my e-mail without dnsexit in the way but my current setup works well enough and I'm not inclined to change it.
I'm going to do a review on the service once they figure out what's going on with DSLR. I don't want to write it out and have it disappear if they do another database restore.
