[Cable] Can VoIP and Bittorrent co-exist with Cable Express 18/0

I have an Asus RT-N16 with Tomatousb and Transmission running at the background for BT downloading. I am using a SIP phone connected directly to the router without an ATA adapter. I tried many sample QoS settings but non of them was satisfactory.

VoIP is working perfectly when there is no BT download. But as soon as BT download starts, no matter what the download speed is, the called party cannot hear me at all. But I can here the other party very well.

Would it help if I upgrade the service to 24/1 or use an ATA adapter?

BTW, when downloading, the router CPU load is well over 1.5, is it normal?

Screen shots of your QoS configuration?

Any time I do a business install, I try to deploy an ASUS RT-N16 running Tomato with properly configured QoS. My clients have a hard time making their calls sound bad once all the pieces are put into place, even when there is little upstream bandwidth available.

My QoS settings for 28/1 cable.

I don't use tektalk style voip but I do use ventrillo. This setting allows me to talk and play online games while the rest of the household try to max out the connection.

Just remember to set what ever port(s) your voip is using to the highest classification and you're set.

I have my SPA-2102 after my Netgear WNDR3700. Voice calls while streaming HD Video and torrenting work fine for my household :P

Thanks for the replies. Here is my latest settings. As I mentioned before, I tried many other settings but did help.

This is half the picture. Also need the Classification page to see what kind of traffic is being caught by each rule.

Detailed QoS instructions for Tomato can be found here. Please read carefully and follow all instructions properly. It will work:

This is the classification page.

Instead of using the Transmission in the background or the router , I just tried using a media player to do the download but had the same results.

Got it. So your classification rules look fine.

On the Basic Settings page, your guaranteed lowest allotment rates are too high. Combined, they cannot exceed 100%.

I suggest these values for your speeds:

Highest 50% - 100%
High 20% - 95%
Medium 10% - 80%
Low 10% - 80%
Lowest 10% - 80%

over 1.5 load sounds bad, you are running way too much stuff on the thing(usually result from QoS).

Are you using encryption on your bt client? Also drop a hard cap on your BT client instead (say like 65% of speed), since you are in cable land this value may need to go lower due to congestion. Make sure your connection count on your transmission is not some ungodly number.

You might be surprised to learn that bittorrent doesn't hurt your connection's speed so much as its latency. The massive number of connections that your little consumer router is chewing on could cause be causing voip issues. I know for a fact that torrents affect VPNs terribly, as well as, of course, video calling.

Of course, you know that torrents affect these things, the problem is the fact that it's incredibly difficult to restrict the number of connections from the router. This is why DDOS attacks are so successful.

What you can do, however, is restrict connections on the torrent client's end. Limit your connections to 2, temporarily, and test. Then try maybe 5, 10, etc.

Having lived with roommates that torrent, I can almost guarantee this to help at least a bit. The only way I could fix my connection when someone was torrenting without a well configured torrent client was by cutting off their MAC address at the router.

Best of luck!

P.S. If it's really an issue in the end, perhaps consider a seedbox. It would likely only cost a bit more per month than the faster connection, then when you download your completed torrents from the server, it only takes one connection and is super fast.

FYI the ASUS RT-N16 is not a "little consumer router", it's a power horse that can easily handle the load of one measly little BT client.

I'd assume the OPs high load is a result of IO wait since USB (assuming the download is saved to a thumb drive) is not the fastest IO interface.

Unless the CPU uses UHCI, there is no reason for USB IO stalls to consume CPU cycles. With OHCI/EHCI the OS should either context-switch to something else or go to idle.

Thanks for all the comments. I adjusted the basic QoS setting as per Trev’s suggestion but it didn’t help. I think the setting of the Transmission might be the root problem. I am going to decrease the numbers of peers to see if helps.
