Strange "Microsoft" call prob from India - 92394

My partner just got a call on his cell phone.

Caller ID: 92394

Caller had an Indian/Indian-British accent. Said he was calling from Microsoft.
Said he was calling from a computer. Asked for my partner by name, "Hello, Mr. Jones...I am calling from Microsoft....I am calling from a computer"

So my partner asked the caller, "how did you get my cell number?" (because it was on his cell....if MSFT had his/our numbers it would almost certainly be land lines numbers on file)

....and the Indian hung up.

I've tried searching the "who calls me" sites and google for clues about what this call was about.

The phone is Sprint, Android, not Microsoft. Partner says he has not had any recent support cases or anything involving Microsoft that would involve his cell phone number and having his name. We use Windows & Office on our computers.

(The only thing that rings a bell for me: In the past (several years ago), when I have been reinstalling Windows one time MSFT wanted me to revalidate who I was (Product Key wouldn't work automatically)..so I had to get on the phone to MSFT in India and reconfirm my identity so that the product key would work, or they gave me a new key....that's the only Microsoft + India + phone experience that I can recall...and I would have used a land line not cell number, he would have too if he did that.)

So we're just trying to figure out if this was Microsoft or not and if there are other reports about these kinds of calls.

Possibly this kind of thing, but his call didn't get that far:

Ja, lots of scams out there. A friend that owns a local computer store tells me that several of his customers were duped and had their credit card info compromised.

Microsoft won't call you for anything except if you're selling illegal software.

Even then, they won't call. They will just see you in court.
