I know I could create a partion and duel boot...but.. Is there a way I can import my vista profile right into Windows 7 safely and hassle free? Does windows have a tool for this? If you want to change to a different version (to Pro Or Ultimate, or to 64-bit), then it's more of an install-from-scratch upgrade. I think Windows can preserve some settings, but you will probably have to reinstall alot of software and other issues. |

Start the install from Windows (versus booting from the install disc) and you will retain your applications and data as long as you choose the upgrade option during the install.
You cannot upgrade to a different architecture (32 to 64 bit for example). You also cannot 'upgrade' to anything other than home premium or ultimate from home premium.
It's always a good idea to have a full data backup before messing with the file system even for in-place upgrades. |
