| [CATV] Best tuner box? The Charter tuner box I have is a Motorola-something or other.
It can only be described as *terrible*.
- The guide lists about 3 lines of programming and has an ad banner.
- It's SLOW.
- With 999 channels, I can't skip or ignore any. Channel "surfing" is impossible.
Charter's website lists CableCARDS for only $2 a month to rent, so I was thinking maybe it was time to look to purchase my own cable tuner box.
What I want:
- Something where I can set it to skip/ignore channels that I don't have. If I only want about 25 channels between 1 and 100 and 50 channels between 700 and 799, I don't need it to display ANY other channels.
- Something where the guide shows a bit more than 3 channels.
- Something a bit quicker. Menus should load quicker, the guide should change pages quicker, etc.
- HDMI and Component output.
Does something out there exist like that? |

Can you buy a TiVo outright? I thought you had to "rent" them (something to do with paying fees to cover the ability to skip commercials).
Is a TiVo the best tuner box out? Can it be set to skip channels?
Edit, I just checked TiVo's site. It's $650-$900 to completely buy a TiVo box. I'm not sure I want to do that, and I don't want to mess with the monthly charge.
I can get a CableCARD USB tuner for $50-$100 and just use Windows Media Center. |

My Cisco 8640, has all of your requirements. It has HDMI and component, you can skip channels, it's very fast especially with Ondemand, it displays about 7 channels and it holds about 50 hours of HD or 100 hours of SD on the DVR. |

Got mine brand new with plastic and everything nine months ago from the local office which they just received in. I was on my 4th Moxi at the time and I was bugging my office every month. Maybe the letters I left out Cisco 8640HDC is different. |

New plastic doesn't mean shit. My friend got charter digital cable a few weeks ago and they brought in two super old HD boxes. Had DVI instead of HDMI. Probably around 6 or 7 years old at least in brand new sealed plastic bags.
You must have a nice office. In my area you get what you get. You don't get to suggest which box you want. When I help my friend sign up for Charter digital I had them specifically ask for boxes with HDMI outputs on them. |

kudos:1 | I mean the plastic that you peel off the front near the lettering and the label; no scratches anywhere including the connections. I've gotten refurbished and used ones before, I now the difference. Anyway, like I said this meets all of the qualifications and I've had no problems since I've gotten it nine months ago.
I don't have a nice office, i kept getting p.o.s Moxi's. So I called the local office and I got to the know the salesman and he called me when they finally got something in new and better then Moxi's with a bigger hard drive. Took about 2 years. |

Just a side note with a retail TiVo box and a rented cable card you will not get the Charter electronic guide. you also lose the VOD access so if you have any premium channels you wont get full benifit of your subscription. Charter will have a "Charter" branded Tivo box available in the near future that will provide all the great TiVO functions along with all of your advanced Charter functions as well. It may be worth waiting for. |
