Re: re: Telus Actiontec root passwords

He offered zip and provided no details as to how he could even remotely help. Telus would care less about a petition, even if we all grouped together and managed to get a few thousand signatures. It's winning at a loosing game. They would laugh, crumple it up and throw it in the trash. Unless you are an executive, I highly doubt you be able to do much except get an ALU for yourself, not thousands of users.

You have to know when to fight, and when to be smart and not waste time with something that will never go anywhere. This is one of those times we all wish there was something we could, however we would need such a louder voice in order to do any sort of impact.

Louder voice is right. Get enough users together, sign a petition and since you don't want my help getting it to the ELT, try sending it to Investor Relations. I'm sure you and Google can find the contact info for that.

Growing up is about learning picking the right battles. Fighting for free snacks at place of employment, that's something that has a possibility. Fighting a multi million dollar corp with even a 50,000 petition, that's something foolish. If anything, it's something to chuckle at before a board meeting to see how much money they made in that quater.

Picking the right battles is one thing but fighting them smartly is another. If presented properly to a corporation, there is a chance they will listen. Last I heard the ALUs were still available in some capacity to business clients so it's not completely impossible that if the demand is shown to Telus that they may be willing to listen.

Telus will have no choice but to offer an option for a standalone modem eventually.

Especially when they start offering VDSL plans to businesses. A lot of businesses have their own routers and a locked-down Actiontec Gateway would be completely unacceptable.

I was just going to say something similar - in my opinion, a business account is worth much more than a residential one, and theres not many businesses that don't have their own network. To try and work around an Actiontec when there are other ISP's available without these combo units, makes for an easy internet business choice.

If Telus wants some of that share, which to my way of thinking is a more stable, long term client anyways, they'd best be getting off their hardware buying butts.

That's another reason why I went to Shaw Business. They supply me with a modem, and I supply the rest. Most business's have their own hardware and need the modem only. The next thing is the limit of speeds on the Telus Business side. Their highest tier is 15x1 unless you are in select area where it may be VDSL2 upgraded. The price is the next thing. A managed 15x1 is in the $150-300 where as Shaw offers 50x5 for $110 and 1 static. The Telus managed doesn't have any more options than what my Shaw Business BB50 does. supposedly Telus monitors their managed circuits for outages, packet loss, etc. You could have an outage for hours and they would never notify you of it. I've always wanted to know what actually is managed, or monitored.

or see if you can get an ALU (which will be nearly impossible).

I've had one for sale for months now and nobody seems to want it.

I'd buy that ALU off you if I switched back to Telus.

But that's not likely to happen unless they stop blocking ports 80 and 443.

Telus seems to think these cheap locked down units they hand out are what people want. What about those of us who are power users and need certain options? Are we to shell out 1000 dollars a month to get a dedicated line to our house to be able to use our own hardware?

If so I see this as punishment for being intelligent and different then the average user.

Unfortunately, it is exactly what 99% of Telus residential customers want. A plug-and-play, all-in-one box that they can simply "set and forget".
