 | new to fios. i have a few questions Hello i just had fios installed and as im going through the channels i dont see any real advantage fios has over optimum. the channel layout is very confusing, the picture quality isnt as good as i thought it was going to be. optimum has really bumped up their hd quality. Im watching acb 7 and the news anchors look soft, not sharp even though the sharpness is high.
also what channels are their on fios ultimate than not on optimum.? |

Did u not check what what FIOS offers before your switch? And the picture quality on SD is far better than Cablevision. HD is HD |

 | i dont know but sd channels like G4 look like crap. and on some sd channels theres a blinking white stripe at the top of the screen. So far optimums hd and sd look better for me. I got the ultimate hd package. the only reason i switches was to lower my bill but i may switch back if i dont like this or if it doesnt get corrected |

So maybe double check that you were installed using HDMI. Check the video settings to make sure you are using 1080i (menu>settings>video settings>video format=1080i)
For SD channels, make sure to turn off the processing by going to (menu>settings>video settings>SD Override and turn it off) stretch will look bad naturally because you are stretching an image.
make sure your TV is not zoomed in on the image too. if some bottom lettering cuts off on channels with the logo towards the bottom, then the tv may be zoomed in.
and play with your settings on the tv. when you got optimum, you probably adjusted either a little or a lot to get the picture looking the way it did, spend a little bit of time doing the same with the fios. you might find your settings don't have to be as high as they were on the optimum system, or they might be higher (i would wager they are going to be lower)
Also try a different HDMI port on your TV. your tv may have 1,2, or upto 4 or 5 hdmi's on it. Believe it or not, one of my hdmi's I couldn't get to look good to save my life! i changed input and hdmi plug in and everything worked beautifully.
If those things don't help, try to be more descriptive, maybe you are getting pixelization, macro blocking, ghosting etc....
that white bar on SD channels was talked about on this thread.

| reply to JOEYNOX Today's electronics freshly unboxed often can be optimized with a bit of fine tuning & calibration, and I also find it helpful to re-check & tighten all of the coaxial connections to avoid possible signal losses or leakage, etc. to insure that we get the max out of our setup.
Do you have a Dolby/digital sound system hooked up - to us, there's just no comparison between Fios and cable, whether it's using component video outputs or HDMI? PQ along with digital 5.1 sound are simply unmatched compared to cable when we watch certain programming, especially action movies, coming out of our 5 years old Bose subwoofer & 7 speakers - as if we've just did an instant upgrade of the entire entertainment systems. YMMV, of course |

WABC uses to much soft filtering on all of their camera which makes the video almost look 16:9 SD on wide camera shots.
The PQ on the broadcast HD channels should be identical since they should be coming from the same source as the OTA feeds. |

JH28 @bankofamerica.com | Re: new to fios. i have a few questions Sorry but I have little sympathy if someone switches without first investigating what channels are available on the service they are switching to, for example Cartoon network HD. If that is your deal breaker then you should not have switched. |

 | reply to JOEYNOX If you expected to be "blown away" by FIOS HD vs. Optimum then, at least on many channels, you will be disappointed. FIOS may be a bit better on most channels, markedly better on some, but overall I think the idea of HD over fiber-optics and "no" compression promise more than they deliver.
Channels are personal: as someone else said, you really needed to check what FIOS offered before switching. For me and some others Optimum's HD channel lineup is quite a bit better than FIOS'; despite that, the speed of channel changing on FIOS is markedly better, as is the DVR. I personally switched because FIOS Internet is so far superior to Optimum Online (at least where I live) it isn't even funny.
If your main objective was to save money and you did then I don't think you have much to complain about, if channel selection was very important you could have checked. |

Re: new to fios. i have a few questions So I was playing with fios a little more and here are my day 1 thoughts
The channel switching speed is insanely faster than opt tv . + Network tv looks very soft on fios compared to optimum. It's night and day . - SD channels look either blurry or skin pigments are super bright. This wasn't do on optimum. - HD isnt better than optimum in anyway . I was watching the MLB network and you can see the grass pixelating/ blurring but the rest of the screen wasn't. - No cartoon network in HD . - I don't know how to explain it but on optimum if a channel was hd then you didn't have to go to another channel to watch it in hd it just was hd. On fios you have to go to the HD section channel section. - I got a good package price with fios. Ultimate packages, 25/25,phone ,all movie channels , for $125 which includes taxes. Plus $40 off my first bill, and a $175 gift card no contract for 2 years. +
I don't know ,maybe I'm just used to optimum. I heard all the fuss over fios, I thought it was gods golden penis.I have it now so I'm going to keep it unless it just irks me then I'll jump back to optimum. 1 thing I don't miss fom optimum is the weird zzzzzip sound that happens sometimes when watching hd channels. My father and brother got fios and love it do maybe it's just me. Also why no clock on the boxes? That's weird
I've had optimum , dish network, direct tv, fios and I think I preferred dish networks tv picture quality over all do far. What do you guys think?
1 side note, the installer was a moron! It took him from 9 am - 5pm to install 3 boxes to a pre wired apt and had problems all day. He drilled a hole from out in the building hallway through my apt door frame instead of the wall. The landlord saw it and FLIPPEDOUT! He said he was going to have fios service pulled from the building lolol FML... The fios guy and landlord got into an argument. |

 | I have Dish as well and agree that there's not much to pick from between it and FIOS, at least when it comes to HD quality.
Of course with Dish you don't get any of the NY sports channels (MSG, SNY, Yes) so if you're a sports fan then Dish is a non-starter.
The automatic HD channel mapping (Dish has it as well as CV) is more convenient, but hardly a deal breaker.
The biggest issue for me with FIOS is the lack of certain HD channels I can get with DISH (e.g. BBCA, RFD). Hopefully FIOS will find a way to furnish those before too long (but I'm not holding my breath). |

 | reply to JOEYNOX I'm not going to address all of your issues except 1 easy one. Your settings in your STB/DVR will allow you to view the Clock. You have a choice of off or clock when you shut your box off. |

icemannyr1 join:2001-04-11 Township Of Washington, NJ | reply to JOEYNOX For the network channels I just don't get how there could be any better PQ on iO, unless someone can tell us that iO is getting all the local broadcast channels from a direct feed with no sub channels included.
For SD channels if you compare YES Network the FiOS video level and color is much better.
I would expect the issue with MLBN to not be FiOS related since that channel is not being re compressed.
Comparing a game that was on MLBN and MLB EI from the same FOX Sports Network on Monday the PQ was the same with pixelation on the grass. |
