 | [Newsgroups] Is paying for a premium newsgroup provider illegal? is the act of paying for a premium newsgroup provider illegal? what are the possible legal ramifications? things that come to mind:
1. just by paying for such a service connects it with your credit card, so there's a permanent record of it that's connected to your real name. is the act of paying for a premium newsgroup provider itself illegal? 2. are there legal uses of binary newsgroups? please be specific (e.g. specific legal binary groups) 3. is there a way to know if a specific provider keeps logs of what users download? would these logs get downloaders in legal trouble? 4. if you're a paying user of premium newsgroups, what are your thoughts on this? |

1) No.
2) There are thousands of legal groups, binary and otherwise. Actually, a group name does not make or mean the group or content is illegal. A name is a name and that is all.
3) The only thing you could do is ask them and make a decision on whether you believe them or not. I dont think anyone knows the answer to if they would get the downloader in trouble because it has never come up before. I don't believe they would to be honest but law dictated by corporate interest does funny things. -- Usenet Block Accounts | Unlimited Accounts |

| reply to latestnews #1 is easily circumvented by using a prepaid card. No one says that you have to give the one of you personal ones. And some providers, like swintec's blocknews/usenetnow offerings, even allow you to mail a money order and then receive the account details via email.
and then are also providers that offer nothing but text group access:

Hard to break with law with binaries if you dont have access to them. |

Absolutely not - premium Usenet Provider give many added benefits to the quality of Usenet access - for example long file retention - while pirating does happen on the Usenet, the Usenet itself has many other awesome uses. 2. Absolutely yes, take a look for yourself at the binary groups available (alt.binaries.ibm-pc) 3. Usenet providers do not log downloads as the logs would be so ridiculously large that it would cost boku bucks to store them. As always if you are concerned with privacy, make sure and read a Usenet provider's terms of service. 4. The Usenet is the most awesome and safest community of user generated stuff and the sharing of ideas and concepts - NASA still posts to Usenet to this very day. Usenet is awesome, give it a go
Just my 2 cents here, but I really like Newshosting - they have a Usenet app that will get you started and rolling right along with very little learning cure. Posting is really easy so you can get going in no time, they have a built in search that is awesome. They have over 3 years of stuff available like 1200+ days old. |

jp10558Premium join:2005-06-24 Willseyville, NY | reply to latestnews I can't speak directly to all the points but as many many ISPs have dropped Usenet entirely, buying access from a provider is one of the few ways to *get* access. Certainly not illegal. This is for Text and Binary groups.
The text groups are useful for a (usually) technically useful discussion group - they are much like these forums. Also certainly not illegal. -- Opera 11.1; Windows XP Pro SP3;Intel C2Q6600; 3GB DDR2 1066; 1M/128k DSL; Comodo Internet Security 5.3;Proxomitron 4.5j Sidki 2009-06-06,GPG ID:0x0A1C6EE3 |

Downloading from one in many cases is copyright infringement, but it is extremely unlikely that any copyright holders are going to catch you doing so.
Uploading copyrighted material to one is another matter entirely. Any US based provider must abide by the DMCA, and take down infringing content. That is likely to result in having your account terminated. Though they might warn you first before doing so. -- I, for one, welcome our new Computer Overlords. |

Of course not. Just more scare tactics. Don't lie man. Usenet is highly illegal. People who use Usenet are criminals that need to be sought after and put down. |
