Even for 8mbps, your friend is likely to see better service in the longer term on a docsis 3 modem.

Getting a docsis2 modem today is the equivalent of only using the rightmost lane on 4 lane superhighway. If there is a slowdown on that lane, tough luck because you can't use any other lane.

It won't be long before cable companies stop accepting new customers on docsis2 modems.
