Re: [Exede] Way out on a limb - Excede FAP Jeez Strange, your generalizations are getting positively tiresome. You go to extremes to avoid making any declarative statements that can actually stand on their own merit. Politicians call that "risk aversion". ViaSat has already taken major criticism because of selling less for more. Hughes could easily stay ahead by not changing a thing. Given the increased allowances already being given to legacy customers, it's emphatically clear that Hughes Gen4 intent is to be MORE generous. ViaSat has no direction to go but TOWARD Hughes' already apparent Gen4 goalposts.

As I recall, ViaSat does 45% of sales, and wholesalers get 55%, so YMMV...as HDMAN says, get Exede from your local COOPs/REAs.

PS: "All you can eat" history - He-Tom Evslin-conceived, launched, and ran AT&T's first ISP, AT&T WorldNet Service. WorldNet popularized all-you-can-eat flatrate monthly pricing for Internet access and forced the rest of the industry, including AOL and MSN, to follow suit. Tom has been blamed and praised for this ever since. He is unrepentant. |

 | My local NRTC dropped off the Wildblue bandwagon recently. They failed to sign up for the new Exede program, leaving me without a co-op options to upgrade.
I agree it makes no sense to buy from Exede (unless you can get the Recovery Plan). Get it from Dish or a co-op, because you can get a better deal.
Hughesnet has already announced in their forum the "download zone" is going nowhere, including with the new Gen4 service.
I agree with others. There is a reason why Exede is not enforcing usage right now. I believe it is a strategic decision to avoid any critics of the service right now. They way they can get more users committed "upfront" before they bring the "hammer down" with the DAP.

| I called DISH NETWORK about the EXEDE program/install (after being transferred three times, I finally got the correct dept......and I have no way of verifying, but I might have been speaking DIRECTLY an a ViaSat rep)
The ONLY benefit of ordering thru DISH is that you get $5 off your bill every month. THAT'S IT!......
the plans are the same, the rates are the same, and the the monthly lease fee is the same..... The rep stated that she "thought" the install/activation fee was $99 and not $149. Also, the rep will NOT tell you about the monthly fee unless you quiz them on it.
I asked the rep why I should order from DISH instead of ViaSat instead, and the only confirmed benefit was $5 off your monthly bill *IF* you have dishnetwork already.

Someone who posts on WB's Forum says, "10GB plan is only from Dish Network."
NRTC offers 10 GB plan also. |

 | You do have to take things posted on the WB forum with a grain of salt. First, they won't let people post the "cons" about their system. If you post information that would be critical of their service, they will delete it. Second, many of the Wildblue users don't have a concept of what the competition offers. All they know is what they have had in the past with Wildblue. Now they have faster speed with no data caps. Will it all be postives with the caps in place and enforced? |

//greg// Wow Greg, a tad harsh??? Why would you even compare Exede to something that is purely vaporware at this point? Gen4 hasn't launched and is entangled in litigation over patents right now. Remember, people can compare DAP's all day, but YMMV based on each persons individual usage. Chill......chill.....

He claims all his hyperlinking supports his wandering opinions, but in reality he's looking for someone else to blame when he's proved inaccurate or incorrect.
And "litigation"? ViaSat is suing SSL, not Hughes. AND the lawsuit is costing ViaSat over $330k/month and rising. How long do you think they can keep that up? And at the same time, they're ordering ViaSat2 from SSL. Smoke and mirrors. The lawsuit is really about getting SSL to give them a discount on ViaSat2. Nothing's stopping the Jupiter/Gen4 launch.
So. Gen4 as "vaporware"? I think you'd lose money on that bet.
What's a DAP by the way?

 | reply to grohgreg DISH and NRTC entrance level is 10 g/month exede is 7.5
That's the big difference all three require monthly fee for lease option. Nrtc and dish both get 5$ off also. And compuguy the people u place your order with on the phone knownext to nothing about the service. My guy didn't knowwhat the 12/10 was...... bahaha you seem to be having a hard time believing the dish deal. Do I need to post a scan of the contract to convince you??
On an aside the 99$ is dependant on your address some type of stimulus brewhaha
Also to wright exede off as smoke and mirrors with real little service improvement is an injustice. Ive had direcway/Hughes & EVDO and it runs both into the ground. Don't buy if your latency sensitive otherwise its great. I hope they launch Jupiter AND viasat 2 that would be the best for all of us. |

grohgregDunno. Ask The Chief join:2001-07-05 Dawson Springs, KY | Read again fella. "Smoke and mirrors" addresses the lawsuit. "Less for more" describes the lower DAP thresholds for higher prices:

Loral Chief Resigns from ViaSat Board of Directors
Loral Space and Communications Chief Executive Michael B. Targoff had resigned from the ViaSat board of directors.

Also, I've read ViaSat does not plan at this time to have Loral build ViaSat-2. |

 | Last time I checked 10g was greater than 9.8g (7.5+ 2.3).
So just get Dish or NRTC and you get more.... not less and it isn't spoon fed to you in 250mb daily buckets.
But dont get offended I am just posting my observations which I feel are relevant seeing as how I have had both services.
Dont get me wrong I loved Hughes it was amazing after living on dialup (it gave out every time it rained too which is funny). And I believe their offering once launched will be just as good if not better than Exede. |
