Long day today - filling out tax forms

I just love this time of year. I just spent all day filling out tax forms. I just love paying all this money to the government.

Tomorrow I do my dad's return.

My employer withheld quite a bit extra this year so the refund sure was sweet.

I use Turbo Tax to my taxes and my mother's taxes. It makes it much easier and is less prone to errors. Plus my handwriting is poor and I prefer to type when filling out forms. I just need to go to Best Buy and pick up a printer cartridge. Not to mention I got a rent increase notice from the landlord today because of an increase in the property taxes.

All of my CPE (including my EMTA) is customer owned. The only Comcast owned equipment in my house is the CableCards in the two TiVO boxes I own.

I use Taxcut software. But even with the software you have to gather, sort, and total up all the backup documents before proceeding.

The reason you're filling out tax forms is to make sure you don't pay all that money to the government.

And think how easy it would be if you had to fill out just one form that took 2 minutes.

It would be that easy--- if we switched to a flat tax.

A flat income tax still has the same problem that our current income tax does. It exempts people who do not report their income, or who otherwise work under the table.

I say we repeal the 16th amendment and outlaw all federal income and payroll taxes, and go with a national non-VAT retail sales tax that works the same way as state-level sales taxes do. On top of being far easier than the current system and being able to get to untapped tax revenue that is currently flowing in the underground economy, it will have the added benefit of ensuring that nearly everyone will pay something.

It also encourages people to save, and pay down debt. Any money you make is tax free so long as you don't spend it.

Then again, I'm sure special interests would find a way to exempt certain essential items like food, clothing & mega yachts....

You have no idea how taxes work do you? pnh102 is headed down the right path with their explanation.

The best tax reform platform out there is the FairTax. Gets the gov out of knowing how much you make, you keep 100% of your income minus state taxes. Fully Funds Medicare, Social Security, Ends the Death Tax, Payroll, and Capital Gains taxes. The 16th Amendment also gets repealed as part of this. The IRS is dissolved shrinking the federal gov by over 100,000 workers. It has been gaining more and more cosponsors each year. Check out »:www.fairtax.org for more info. This is in response to pnh102 idea.

I agree in principle with the FairTax and if given a choice between the current tax code and the FairTax, I would choose the FairTax. My problems with the FairTax though are as follows.

1. There's no way the IRS can be abolished as an agency, even with the FairTax. Even if the IRS were to be eliminated, there would still need to be a federal agency tasked with enforcing the collection of the FairTax, just as the IRS is tasked with enforcing the collection of the current income and payroll taxes.

2. Prebates... this would require the government to keep track of every individual, their marital status, and their spending habits as to ensure that these people collect the correct prebates. You'd need a massive federal bureaucracy to accomplish this task. There's also the vast potential for fraud here. The reason I suggested the exemption of unprepared food, clothing and medicines is because that is how most states reduce the regressiveness of their sales taxes. It is also passive and requires no work on the part of the taxpayer. The federal government shouldn't need to know your private relationship status anyway.

With the Fairtax the the states with sales taxes would handle the enforcement of payment of the sales taxes at the cash register. A small federal agency will replace the IRS to handle the states without state sales taxes FairTax receipts. The probate is handled by the Department of the Treasury and the Social Security Administration would handle the paperwork with a simple form and registry of those forms. You would be able to opt out of the probate if you wanted to. Also only those with valid social security numbers would get it.

I do like how the states would have the power, if they so chose, to withhold money from the federal government in this manner.

But as of right now, the IRS can barely keep track of taxpayer SSNs. If an illegal uses your SSN to get your refund, not only are you SOL, but you have to prove to the IRS that you are you. I can see that happening with any tax regime that makes use of SSNs.

Sales taxes also have their problems. You can bypass paying taxes by sitting on wealth or moving it offshore, purchasing abroad or investing abroad. It can be very regressive.

The best system would probably be a combination of the two, a flat income tax and a national sales tax, both would be at a lower rate then if they were the exclusive tax system.

In this way everybody would pay something and it would be simple.

People already move their wealth offshore under the current tax regime. Under a sales tax, there would be less of an incentive to do that, as you can just keep your money in a US bank for as long as you like without paying a single penny in tax on it. The bank benefits by having more money to lend to borrowers. As for regressiveness, both of the proposals we've offered mitigate that.

Absolutely not. Those of us who pay taxes at the federal and state level already see nearly half or more of our take-home pay go out the door in taxes. The last thing we need is for the federal government to have an additional revenue stream that will be abused. Either have a federal sales tax xor a federal income tax, but not both, under any circumstances.

I don't want to pay a 10% or 20% federal sales tax on top of all the other federal taxes I already pay.

It would encourage large ticket purchases overseas rather then from US firms.

And I disagree, we need both, albeit at a lower rate.
