 | [CenturyTel] Tips for getting Century Link to consider hooking u I am looking for tips in how to communicate with Century Link so they will actually send a technician to my house and let me talk to a local technician about internet options.
Right now there are two lines running in front of my house. One line (Fiber) contains High Speed Internet and feeds all of the houses within 1/4 mile away from me with up to 40 mb - the other older line is not capable of hosting high speed internet as it is too far from the central office - this is not a fiber line. My house is currently hooked up to the non-fiber line.
Century Link indicates that their computer system says that my residence is too far from the central facility so I am not able to get DSL - which is true on the line my house is currently hooked up to.
Any advice on how to get Century Link to come out and look at this would be appreciated. |

Technicians are field personnel who are not given pricing or product offerings, so that sort of shoots down that wish.
Based on what you describe it sounds like the fiber passes you and feeds a remote switch and DSLAM. Continuing based on what you wrote, you on are a copper pair coming from the opposite direction than where the fiber feed remote is located. And what you would like to do is have your service come from the fiber feed remote in order to obtain DSL.
This is a bigger wish than what you may think. This would involve management and engineering approving turning around all the cable between the fiber feed remote and you. This is way way above the level of a local tech, yes the local tech may do the work but not until someone a lot farther up the food chain approves it.
It does happen as I know of one case where the state VP had to approve it to turn around about 2500 feet of cable, but it is rare. And I suggest not even starting to dream about that fiber that runs right in front of you. An act of congress wouldn't get them to dig it up, so don't even start dreaming and drooling over that idea. |

| reply to MNguy You'd be wasting your time. As mentioned, CT wont magically "tap" into that FO cable that passes your house. That's a carrier or SONET cable that feeds RT's (not for FTTP).
In the twisted pair and DSL world, 1/4 mile can be the same 4,000 miles. -- ...because I care. |

I live in the city right by the towns mall, I live on 40th and the CO is on 26th and the streets go up to like 60th. But yet offered the same speeds as I did in 1998...
Comcast can offer 100Mb but Centurylink don't seem to care about this side of the town.. I heard there are upgrades coming, But from a installer/field tech. He said "I don't know about this part of town". All I would need is 1 little RT DSLAM and they wouldn't have to run to many lines...
But as it goes. You wont know till it's done.. 2012 and the telco companies are so far behind.. it's sad really as the consumer has to pay.. No competition mean higher prices and there is nothing anyone can do about it.. |

They will look into it and get back to you. Odds of getting what you would like are very slim. |
