I've been an AIX admin for approximately 8 months. I have some Linux under my belt, but AIX is really a different world. I work with a guy who is almost done with his Master's. I've picked up more in 8 months than he learned in his Master's program in Enterprise Architecture.
I work in an area that has a huge outsource of people from India with tremendous qualifications and their resumes padded with experience. I think that all of this stuff is padded from their country with bogus real life experience because only a small fraction of them know what I know, but they're supposed to have the qualifications of someone who has 5-7 years under their belt.
I agree that there is a certain mentality that admins have to have. I was just talking about that today with another admin. I think that actual mentality is the mentality to troubleshoot. You have to be a master troubleshooter to be a good admin. That skill set not only allows you to be able to put out sys admin fires of the day, but for you to be able to go through your daily sys admin tasks. -- A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have. -MLK
