[BC] Shaw BB50 Wifi Issues

I hope this hasn't been discussed to death already. Looked thru similar threads but didn't see what I was looking for.

I had the extreme package and a Dlink DIR 615 router. The Wifi in my house was never good but it was tolerable. Then my family purchased an Ipad and we noticed that with the kids on the computer, wife on lap top and me on the Ipad the devices would slow right down and we couldn't stream video.

Upgraded to Broadband 50 plan and all was good for the first day until we started having the wifi AND lan suddenly and periodically drop. Got shaw out to replace the modem (There's a customer service how not to manual somewhere in that story).

This seemed to solve the problem of the dropping connection but the wifi was suddenly horrible so we called the help line and got the modem bridged thru my DIR615.

Now the wifi still sucks. I get download speeds around 45 thru lan and between 4 and 7 thru wifi plus we experience the devices periodically dropping the wifi connection and issues with being unable to join the network.

Purchased a range extender but this did nothing to help. I can't move the modem/router without moving the problem. My home office and home computer are in opposite ends of the house and I can't run cables.

Not sure on if I should be looking at a different solution, moving back to extreme, purchasing a new router or a fleet of range extenders for every outlet in the house

Please keep in mind that I'm not too tech savy Thanks for any advice!

Are you having any more problems with the LAN after getting the modem swapping? If the only problem remaining is Wifi you'll want to try changing the wireless channel. Try changing it to channel 1,6, or 11. Also make sure the router isn't near any CRT monitors or cordless phones. And heck, make sure all your devices are G or N. If one is set to B they will all switch to B.

No problem with LAN. Just WIFI

Already tried channel 1/6/11, moved the router away from the monitor and moved the cordless phone (dect 6.0) to the other side of the room.

I have a macbook, imac (new this year), Ipad 2 and 2 iphone 3gs. Not sure how to check if they are G or N.

Should I switch the mode on the router to N and G?

All your gear looks to be N capable. Your MacBook, iMac, and iPad are all dual-band capable. This means they support 802.11n at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. 1, 6, 11 are actually the non-interfering channels for 802.11b. 802.11n uses different non-interfering channels, and wide channels (40 MHz) actually makes this harder. There is a good wifi graphical scanner for OSX on the app store called Wifi Explorer that I use.

To be honest if you are using apple gear there are some slight advantages to using the Airport Extreme router. Apple supposedly runs code to test wireless speed between your devices and the airport and will switch between 2.4 and 5 GHz for better connection. Apples router is also using more power (better range) and is 450 rated, compared to the dir-615 at 300 (three versus two streams).

If you are bridged, getting full speed wired, and only having issues on wireless then this doesn't seem like a shaw issue, as even your own equipment is giving slow speeds on wifi. Likely using a wifi scanner will show you some useful info.

If your wired internet speeds are good,

Your modem is in bridge-mode,

This would be your equipment after the modem.

DECT 6.0 phones are 1.9GHz, so that won't be an issue.

Try going to a store with a good/easy return policy, try a new router.

Try changing the SSID, might have another WiFi device you have forgtten about.

I'll give a new router a try since I can always return it if it doesn't do the trick. But I did try the wifi modem on its own first with similar results so I'm skeptical that the issue is the router.

Maybe something in the wiring of the house that is interfering with the wifi? If so I'm stumped

Thanks for the advice by the way!

New router = same result. Maybe it's a signal strength issue with something in the room with the router reducing the signal. As we speak my ipad can't connect to the network but my imac has no issue other than being a bit slow.

Back to the drawing board. Thanks again for the advice.

How are the speeds when you are wireless in the same room as the router?

As the modem in bridge modem can't tell if a frame has come over wired or WIFI at any point in the frame's life, it won't be the modem slowing WIFI down if the wired speeds are good.

I had weird WIFI issues before, and Wifi Explorer showed me a lot of devices on the same channel as my AP. Devices on the same channel = interference. You need to find a free channel, and you'll have the most luck in the 5 GHz spectrum that your MacBook, iMac and iPad support.
