Seems like someone who's beta testing Firefox 12 would have to tell us if it's mandatory.
The nightlies are version 14, which I use but I'm not really a beta tester. There's no way to tell if updates would be automatic since nightlies are upgraded...nightly. It's not automatic or silent but I wouldn't expect it to be.
