I wish Google would throw their weight behind the idea. I know the hardware manufacturers like Apple won't, they like the idea of selling you a different phone every time you want to change carriers.

Are you out of this world? Ever heard of iPhone 4S? Or the trully unlocked Quad-GSM w/ Quad-UMTS w/ Dual-CDMA2000 w/ LTE iPad 3?

Google doesn't have any weight behind such an idea at all. If anything, Apple is the company that would be seeking for this to happen. And it'll happen eventually.
