Re: New to Optik Tv. Options for using my own router?

I think he is using GPON not VSDL2. The E4200 should work as long as the "filter multicast" option is not set. If you didn't change it maybe the IGMP relay stopped working and the router needed a reset.

The other option is to install a 3rd party firmware that supports multicast forwarding on the E4200.

Hmm...

Well that Thing in the garage is a fiber terminal.
and even without the action tech in the system it seems to work for some while. then drop out.

Id love to do more experimenting however i would have to do it betwen the hours of 7pm and 7 am because outside those hours my grandmother in law is watching her tv and would not like it to be down.

If you have fiber, then the actiontec is probably connected to it via ethernet. If you put a switch between the actiontec and the fiber terminal, you should be able to hang your own router off the switch and have completely separate networks for the tvs and the pcs.

the drop out has something to do with multicast and IGMP snooping/forwarding or something like that. Search the forum, there's been a couple posts in the past year mentioning it. Sadly, I can't remember anymore what exactly it is.

**EDIT** IGMP Proxy - just spotted it in another post...

Which the filter multicast option on his router disables. So if you have it UNchecked it should work fine.

If you are finding that it goes for minutes or hours before it stops working then the IGMP proxy on your router is crashing or having some other problem. It will only work for around 30 seconds if your router isn't forwarding the multicast packets.
