Re: Start Communications - new TPIA Rogers/Cogeco

It's a 'Catch-22'.

Been mentioned several times - somewhere - in this gi-normous thread....

Direct Link :

»Start Communications

And to find a short-list of that and other less-known forums, there is a link near the top of the current forum's front page, and it's called member submitted list.

I find reading this thread very helpful. Just for getting an opinion on an decent ISP alone for running away from Cogeco HSI. Also it is very helpful to.

Is it just me or am I not the only one who can't see any posts being added to this thread?

Edit - nevermind, now I can. Weird.

OK it is now happening to me also. I added a post and now it is not there after hitting refresh a few times.

The 4th new post births the new page (THIS post, for example).

I mentioned it in a post on last page (Page 49).

Hey Rocca, any chance you are going to get your own forum setup for just Start.ca. It's difficult to see any of the topics in this one gigantic thread. Not currently a subscriber, but probably very soon.

We have an adhoc form at »Start Communications if it gets busy enough DSLR may move it to a listed form.

jubenvi what modem are you using and how are you getting 27 Mbps in Sarnia ? I thought the best we could get was somewhere around 14 to 16 Mbps like we did with Cogeco ? seriously I would love to see 27 Mbps !

DPC3000 rented from Start.ca

I thought the same, but a week in speed consistently at that level.

Me too. So how much is the rental fee and how did you get the DPC300? If I wanted one, would I have to ask for it or would they just give it to me?

$5/month

Just what was sent. You'd have to ask Start.ca if all rentals in Cogeco land are getting the DPC3000.

START is more likely to issue a DPC3000 if you subscribe to their 'Advanced' package for $50 per month (as I do), as that speed range actually NEEDS a D3 series modem for optimum performance, helped out by local nodes which are not too congested, though even on somewhat congested nodes, a D3 will often perform better than a D2, due to its wider choice of data channels, and channel bonding.

But Cogeco, despite the other negative things which they well deserve to have said about them (and which I've said frequently in their own forum, if anyone wishes to check my posts over there), DOES seem to be spending money to improve and upgrade their network, a recent example being some of the cities in which some of you live.

OTOH, B$ELL was dragged kicking and scratching into spending for that purpose, which was a large part of why I left DSL, as well as BHELL's draconian Demarcation Point responsiblilty politics and ripoff fees, even if just to go to Cogeco proper, at that fateful time last year - I just got sick of Bell's BS, forced on us thru otherwise good and caring Indie ISPs such as TSI, and rubber-stamped by our benevolent CRTC.

In Cogeco areas, the DPC3000 comes as standard rental with the Advanced package. For the Basic/Standard levels it's a SB5101N.

I have the DPC3000. Anything I need to do to the modem to get these faster speeds ?

Hey I did a speed test tonight at Speedtest.net and got 20.95 Mbps download and 2.08 Mbps upload. Very nice. God I love Start.ca ! I am getting so much more value with them from my internet. It is greatly appreciated.

Just subscribe to START's Advanced package, restart your modem occasionally, and whenever Cogeco completes their upgrades, you will benefit.

And even before that U/G work is done, you will most likely find the 14Mbps service to be smoother with a D3 modem, especially at peak periods, as per my last post.

So you must already be on their advanced plan.

Are you really getting 2Mbps UPstream on your profile ?

If so, then "ME TOO, PLEASE !" [Standard followup kid's answer to "Who Wants GUM ?", after "I DO, I DO !"]

Well I really plan to transfer from Turbo 14 to Start's Advanced Cable Internet this fall. So I could see over 16Mbps+ depending on the volume of users? I just really hope the nodes do not limit me to 14Mbps but 300GB/month over 80GB/month is just awesome.

So how does the billing work?
Free transfer
$49.95/month Advanced Cable,
$5/month modem rental?
Or is the modem rental fee included in the $49.95/month? Also how much would the DPC3000 be for a 'one-time' purchase?

Modem is extra.

Go to their site, put in your postal code to see what is offered for your area, then click to order but do not follow thru to the point where you pay.

The modem options and other things will present themselves as you interact with the form.

Some observations :

They seem to have reduced the price to BUY the DPC3000 by $10 since the last time I checked, unless you read wrongly at the other end.

This is good.

Also, I do not think that they will charge to ship you a rental modem either (though you may have to pay the shipping if you eventually return it).

Otherwise, your 1st breakdown is exactly what I pay now, and for the same things, in Cogeco-Land.
