| [Exede] Exede - VOIP via OBi110 (with Google Voice) is outstandi I know the subject of VOIP via Exede will come up sooner or later, so here is my experience. I bought an Obi110 (if you don't know what this is, you should check them out.) and installed it on my new Exede service and connected it to my Google Voice account.
All I can say is that NOBODY could tell I was using sat based VOIP. What really shocks me is that lack of a huge delay. I can call my home phone and have one in each ear and talk. The delay is comparable to doing the same thing with a cell phone and a landline. I'm not sure how that is, because of the distance travel of the data, etc, but it is not bad at all. In fact, I would say that it is VERY usable, and best of all....FREE. Except for the cost of the Obi110 of course which was $50 on sale.
Don't be afraid to give it a try!!!

|
 | reply to hdman There should be about 300 ms latency for the signal to travel from ground to satellite, from satellite to ground and then from gateway to a land line telephone. Since humans can not perceive a latency less than about 200 ms, you should not perceive much of a delay. VOIP through a geostationary satellite should work acceptably well provided the ISP allows it. |

| reply to compuguybna said by compuguybna:have you determined the amount of bandwidth this is using???? No, actually I haven't. Or should I say, I could not tell. I checked my usage meter with the NRTC prior to a 20 min call, and it did not move up at all afterwards. I don't think that was a good test mainly because the meter is in GB. It started at 4.1 GB and didn't go up.

So you're looking at 72MB per hour of talk time. |

 | reply to hdman Can you try Skype or a like service for Video Conferencing and let us know how it works??
Also can you post your speeds and PING time?
Give us any other updates on your experience. I am trying to decide if this will be worth the cost, or if I should invest in a 4G signal booster from Wilson Electronics (~$500) and subscribe to a Verizon 4G service for home use. |

 | reply to iansltx Thank you for your VOIP post. Very informative if not exciting to hear. I generally get an 800 ms PING response on WildBlue ProPackage from my location. Have you tried a Skype or MSN type video conference? I am deep in the Appalachian Mountains and need to video conference for work. Please let me know your experience if you try it.
Also, for those out there more technically savvy than I, given the newness of Exede and the likely limited number of subscribers, what's the likelihood this users experience may not be replicated by others in the months ahead.

| reply to Bill Duffell My pings are 755ms or so. My down speeds are right around 15M and ups are in the 3-4M range. I have not done video conferencing, but my guess is that you will see about a 1sec or so delay. As far as Skype, I don't use it. The Obi110 is a FAR better choice if you are going to use VOIP for any length of time. Couple that with Google Voice for FREE, why would you use Skype? With the OBi110, you can use your existing phones and phone wiring in your house...

| Uh....I have 4G available. But with the caps, price, and the fact that it is SLOWER...why would you say not to get Sat? Sounds like you have an axe to grind with sat, because your post is not very factual.....

At some point, they will stop installs on ViaSat-1s beams...and most likely use Anik-F2 & WB-1 satellites for 5 mbps service. |

I feel fairly qualified to speak about the issue. I have used Verizon 3G in 48 states (I'm missing Delaware and Hawaii). I have been using 4G since August. I have a Verizon 4G aircard and a verizon 4G phone (Droid Bionic). The aircard has an external antenna on the bus, with amp. I have 2 satellite internet dishes on 2 different services, which I use in all of those many, many places where they are superior to the available cellular signal and/or the cellular signal simply does not exist.
I can say, with full confidence, that satellite is alive and well, with no chance that it will become dead anytime soon. -- Motosat self-pointing dishes: 1.2-meter XF-3 on 127W, .74 meter G74 on 127W, SL-5 HD DirecTV|idirect 3100|Hughes HN7000S|Verizon UMW190 Air Card|1990 Blue Bird Wanderlodge Bus "Blue Thunder"|Author of hnFAP-Alert, PC-OPI and DSSatTool |
