Likely the seal itself is worn, or probably does have some mineral deposits built up on joint so the seal won't seat fully.

I'll take a flashlight to it to see what I can see

the pull up part is near the end of the faucet so I should be able to see something

if so would it maybe be easier to replace the whole faucet?

If you can take it apart you can fix it. A worn rubber washer is easy to replace, and mineral deposits can be cleaned off by CLR type products. It may be easier to just replace it, but likely more expensive. It's fixable either way tho.
