[Newsgroups] UseNetNow very disappointing

Hi just thought I would let off some steam by posting my findings here.
I have been with Giganews for just under 10 years and the recent takedowns have caused me to start looking into changing provider, so I have been reading the forums for some recommendations. First on my list was UseNetNow which seemed to come well recommended so I joined for a week to give them a test.
Currently I'm only using a 10mbit connection so I thought there would be no trouble maxxing that out. WRONG the most I could ever get from the UseNetNow servers was about 400Kb download (3.2 mbit) ... NO NOT ISP LIMIT as switch to Giganews on the same port and straight back up to just over a Mb download!!
This was no matter which port or number of connections too. CRAP!
Next test was to download the same post (an 8gig dvd which I tested as on both servers) and let it go over night. Following morning all parts and pars were downloaded from giganews no repair needed. UseNetNow faired very badly here (from QuickPar): Number of source files 83, Complete files 2, Damaged files 75, Missing files 2. The complete files were the sfv and the ver short last rar part! Most of the files were only about 6-10 out of 33 blocks and in total i needed 1693 more blocks out of 2676 to even repair.
Glad I only wasted 1 weeks money on this drivel!

IMHO anyone who recommends this must be an affiliate or reseller or something because that is way below acceptable.
I'm trying Astra next.

let me know how Astra works out...im currently with Usenetserver.com and blocknews.net as backup. It has been fairly decent with both but as main usenet provider i was thinking of changing to support the independent.

Sorry you had some problems D1sappointed. I am assuming you were using the EU server? Did you see the same (speeds, etc) on the US server? I do not know enough about it, besides just what I have read in forums...have you ever been caught in Virgins throttling?

I run several VPS servers around the globe to kind of get "real" world speeds from different locations and have been getting the norm of 75+ MBits for each of them when I test.

Can you send over a link to the NZB via PM so i can take a look?

EDIT- Didnt realize you were not registered...if you can, send the NZB over to tech (at) blocknews.net

Blocknews is owned by Usenetnow.

@OP

I have seen a few threads here and there where people are having issues with Usenetnow. They all have issues to some extent tbh. Astraweb has issues with posts around the 300 day range +/- 50 or so days. I use my free XSUsenet account to fill in anything it might miss, sort of like a block account. You could do the same or get yourself a block account from another provider.

I had a 6 month subscription with Usenetnow last year. Left them in January to go with Ngroups. While I was with them I had occasional speed issues. What I did to get around those issues was not to use the front end load balanced IP, but their backend server IPs and also have a couple of connections to their eu IP.

I can't remember the IPs, but my setup was 7 connections to US1, 7 connections to US2, and 7 connections to the eu IP. This configuration saturated by 70 Mb connection.

See if swintec will help you out with the IPs.

Hi
Thanks for all the replies, just thought I'd update you all.
I have a friend at work who was using newsdemon and when I pointed out that they are Highwinds and therefore subject to takedowns he has switched to Astra, which is very useful for my comparisons
Since last posting I have been testing with giganews takedowns.
Out of 6 DL discs (all 8gig content) ... Giganews 0 (obviously), UsenetNow 5 down full speed and 1 entirely article not found??, Astra all 6 full speed only minor repairs needed.

Usenetnow has performed as I initially expected speedwise but has one post entirely removed, this has confused me as I thought they didn't remove? (I know there could be many reasons but just limited to all content of that one disc!) The retrieval of the other 5 discs has restored faith in them and my initial disappointment may have been premature.

Astra performed flawlessly and will be my new provider from next week. Interestingly enough I also tested the nzb that failed on UsenetNow initially ... that too came down perfectly.

Lastly, on a slightly related note I was also introduced to Sabnzbd as a client, this well impressed me with its schedule, throttling and backup options.
Cheers
